Four bags at Safeway, $60.00! What did you buy that was so inexpensive?

I bought four bags at Raley's on Saturday and it came to 150.00!

The odd thing is I don't sense the increase as I'm going through

the store, filling my cart with basics (no meat, no seafood, no "treats") and I just about faint when my total is $90.00.

I always wondered about that; I bet shrinking sizes are the reason.

I have so many recipes that call for "a 24-oz can" of something and I can only find 23 or 22 oz cans. I always wondered about that discrepency. Mystery solved.

did you see the segment on the Today show about packaging getting smaller for the same price?

Ice Cream and Mayo were 2 examples of products being packaged in smaller containers that look the same, so we pay more per oz. Do they think we won't notice??

Wow, that is good compared to here...

I'm with Karen -- I don't think I could have gotten out the door less than about $150 at a Safeway and Whole Foods, no way. Especially if I bought any kind of meat/poultry/etc.

Interesting the different prices across the country. Yesterday I got 3 small containers of B&J ice cream (ok - my bad), 2 quarts of milk, and 1 box of cereal for a little over $35. I also paid $4.76 for a gallon of prem. gas (at the cheap station).

I notice when the recipe calls for a can of whatever and the recipe fails because

the number of ounces in the can is less. So - all the old recipes I inherited I write weight next to each.

Four bags? My greenbag from WholeFoods wasn't even half-filled for $75.

I think we're going vegetarian for more meals. Although I have to say, a pound of WF's Cowboy Hamburgers cost less than the bottle of balsamic.

That's a great tip to note the amount. I ran into that problem making fudge with

evaporated milk. Recipe called for 2/3 cup which used to be one small can. Not any more. Also, recipes that call for 2-35 ounce cans of tomatoes need 2-28 ounce cans plus a 15 ounce can to make the same amount.

Yikes! Actually, everything we bought should have been cheaper.

A few months ago, it would have been $40.00 worth of groceries. Everything seems to have gotten so expensive lately.
