FRC A friend at work needs some advice. Here's her story...

"Yesterday evening I decided to cook some coconut shrimp for my dinner, so I turn on the oven to 450 and left the kitchen while it heated, only to be called back by the fire alarm and horrible smell. I hadn’t looked in the oven before I turned on the heat because I NEVER store anything there. Apparently—for some unknown reason—I must have put something plastic in there sometime and forgotten it or them. Yes, melted plastic covered the racks and bottom of the oven. I don’t know how to clean that mess, so I grabbed my car keys and went straight to Lowe’s, found the stove I wanted, and it will be delivered Saturday. How long do you think that smell will linger?? Running all exhaust fans helped some, but not enough."

Thanks

My friend did something similiar; it was a plastic serving piece after thanksgiving. Her family

was trying to help with the dishes/cleanup and stashed a baking pan and plastic utensils in the oven. Fortunately, she did not have to replace her oven, but the smell!!

She found luck in using those mini pebbles (?) available in HomeDepot. They are sold in small bags, the size of ziploc, and have mesh netting to keep the stones together. I believe they are designed to help with "basement odor" and moisture. BUT, they helped her.

Another option is to cook something to mask the current smell. I know she does not have an oven, but maybe once it arrives, the first item to cook is an apple pie?

What a shame for your friend. Fun getting a new oven, but never fun when you weren't expecting the expense!
