FRC about Greek yogurt (again)...

I finally got around to going back to the place where I saw the Greek yogurt. I couldn't wait to try it, but was a little disappointed.

It was a little lumpy (which I could fix by processing - or stirring - it). Also, it was sour, almost bitter. Kind of like sour cream with a bitter aftertaste. And if I leave it on its own for a while, I can see that it has been bubbling slightly - little bubbles on the surface, almost like yeast batter. This doesn't seem right. Fizzy yogurt (although there is no carbonated taste) ?!

Did I get a bad batch or is that how it is supposed to be (scratching my head, thinking maybe this is why I never really liked yogurt in the first place)?

And lastly, now what do I do with it? Any suggestions other than adding honey and fruit for a breakfast alternative? TIA.

either it was a bad batch or the store didn't keep it cold enough - i've never

encountered a balkan-style yoghurt like that.

I would throw it away. It should be thick, creamy, smooth and rich.

A little sour like yogurt but not curdled and lumpy and mine never bubbled. I got some once that came in a sealed carton like cottage cheese and I did not care for that one. It didn't have a date on it and it was not creamy. It almost seemed dried out if that is possible. I figured it was just old. I now buy it from a store that has a large container and they scoop out what you need. I think thay do enough business so it has always been fresh, even the time that I emptied the container. I would give it another try though because when it is good there is nothing better.

I would return it to the store.....

They should be made aware of the problem and should be happy to refund your money.

So I take it this is not normal. Is it the bubbly part, the bitter taste, or the lumpyness?

(or all of the above?) ;o)

Thanks Liz and Gayle - I took it back and she said that she thought it might've been bad!

Strange why she didnt try and catch me (she wasn't the one that waited on me). Thanks for your input. I bought some more somewhere else and will try tonight.

Thought I would tell you that Greek yogurt is now one of my favorite foods! more...

And from the label it looks like it is lower in calories than sour cream.

33% less, if I am doing my math right. Something I was afraid of when I heard it is higher-fat than regular yogurt. It tastes EXACTLY like full-fat sour cream (my weakness). In fact it is so thick that you could dilute it a little to make it "stretch" a little further if you are eating it straight. It's really nothing like regular yogurt. Thanks for the tip!

'Just wondering if anyone knows the difference between the two (sour cream vs. Greek yogurt)? You can use the two interchangably in recipes I assume? Thanks.
