FRC Caveat for those tempted to subscribe to Cook's Illlustrated "special offer".....

In March I made a trial subscription to CI for 6 months for $19.95, the bait being a "free" microplaner. I have received the promised magazines but the microplaner has yet to turn up. I just received an answer to my third inquiry about this which continues to state they did not expect so many replies and I will get one as soon as they receive them. At my age it's a bit of an empty promise. Amyone else had same experience?

OH NO!! I took them up on it and paid yesterday.

I agreed to the offer last year and did receive the microplane--quite a while later

I got sucked into "America's Test Kitchen" $29.95 book...and haven't used it yet. But I did get the

microplane shortly thereafter....which I could have bought for $12.

I now refuse to take unsolicited calls from CI or ATK...obviously my culinary willpower is weak.

I got an empty envelope...

Apparently the microplane wasn't packaged for shipping propoerly and busted out of one end of the envelope somewhere along the way - I decided it wasn't worth the effort of trying to get it replaced. So, i have the magazine, which I thoroughly enjoy reading, but no microplane yet. Any suggestions on best brand to buy?

Isn't "Microplaner" the brand like "Kleenex" for tissues?

It is my understanding that the registered trademark "Microplane"...

...is the original microplane-type grater. It originated as a wood-working tool, and ended up starting a revolution in the kitchen.
