FRC - I went out to the garden last night to check on them, and found...

that what I thought was garlic chives had not spread at all since I planted them last fall (I thought they would "take off" this spring/summer). And, although they were nice and tall and green earlier this summer, I disappointedly saw them turn into hard, tan, stalks over the past couple of weeks. I thought I'd let them go, and did for a while, but I decided to pull them up last night.

To my surprise, they weren't garlic CHIVES at all, but just GARLIC! Guess they are like potatoes - when the stalks turn brown, they are ready to be harvested?

Has anyone else here ever grown garlic? If I leave them in longer, will they get bigger (they are only about the size of a ping-pong ball right now)? I would think they would, but just my luck, they will rot if I don't get them out at the right time... it's been a wet summer here.

I don't get the "sheath" part under the Harvesting section.... ?

It sounds as if they breakdown if you let them go too long? Haah? This seems backwards. Any first-hand experience with them so that you can describe it to me?

Also, I have no foliage... only tall, thin, brown stalks - ?

Thanks for the link though.

We also grow garlic. Dig when stems dry up. The ones left year to year

come back the next spring.
