bought one lately and have any comments on what to get, what not to get, etc. Small kitchen, probably prefer not the glass-tops, unless they are very useful. I know the burners heat up very quickly!

Thanks

Dawn, do you mean a range (oven below, burner on top?) more

I subscribe to Consumer Reports, and the Kenmore (Sears brand) got about the best recommendations for either smoothtop or coil burner models. You may be able to access the CR website to view the comparisons. E-mail me if you can't.

Yes, oven, stove, range... the big (white) thing in the corner of everyone's kitchen ;o) Thanks, I

will take a look at the site but thought I'd also ask here for first-hand experiences. Thanks again Mark.

D, I didn't think I'd like the glasstop, but I love it. Easy to shift pots around, so easy to clean

The only thing I can't use on it (as far as I know) is my cast iron frying pan. Because it might scratch the glass top?? Should research that more.

We don't have any kids in the kitchen (at least not age-wise kids...I'm convinced Larry is 4 years old at times) so you may need to consider those issues.

We got ours (Kenmore) used off Craig's List for $250 (for a $600 3-year old model). Bachelor was upgrading his kitchen to all stainless steel and had used the oven to store his potato chips and pretzels. Oven racks were still wrapped in plastic.

I bought a Whirlpool with Accubake System (supposed to bake evenly) and also has a self-

cleaning oven cycle and love it. It is all-electric w/ 4 coil burners on stove top. Bought it on 3/3/2004.

We're upgrading too and have the same dilemma...

Keep the whole stove contaption or go to cooktop and oven below it -

In the UK and Australia we always a cooktop and 2 ovens in the wall, but whole stoves are not popular in those places -

I'm actually thinking of going the full upgrade to induction cooktop, but not sure if I can justify the outrageous prices for them over here...

So I'm keeping an eye on this post as well Dawn!

Thank you - I will digest all this when I thaw out from the snow. heheh - I did manage to cook

a great dinner tonight - Cheezz's Hoppin' John risotto and Dawn_MO's Country Chicken. Very good to both!!

I'm still not sure I understand the difference between all the terms, ie. "stove" vs. "cooktop and oven below it" that Sandra describes, but I'll look at this when my brain is working again.

Here is my interpretation, Dawn

It was a "stove" when Granny used wood to fuel the fire. It bacame a "range" when they put an electric plug on it. It morphed into a "cooktop" when the burners and ovens could be separated with the ovens in the wall and the burners on an island.

And if it is a VIking or Thermidor, it is an investment!!

That's it Mark...

When I say stove I mean the whole thing, burners and oven in one...

When I say cooktop I mean the burners alone, as a slab that get built in to the counter and the oven is a separate entity which can go in the wall or in a cabinet below the counter...

I think I got the first-ever gas version. I loved having the broiler at waist level, instead of

down on the floor, like typical ovens with one burner. I broiled like crazy for the first few months.

But, there was sort of a backdraft issue when I used the broiler; a burst of flame when I opened the top oven. I kinda liked it, but I guess someone burnt their hand and then sued.

So I got a recall notice and they came out to replace the computer chip. Now, the top oven has to heat itself to 400* BEFORE the broiler will turn on. It takes 15 minutes and I hate it. What is a broiler if not a QUICK FIX for something that hasn't browned properly?

So, I used to avoid the broiler because I had to lie on the floor to observe it. Now, I avoid it because it takes too long to heat.

If the top oven is already hot, this is not a big problem.

I'm sure they've solved this in newer models, but, as an aside, I've had to replace the expensive ignitors in both ovens, and I think the electric ovens avoid this issue.

My dream Gemini would have a gas cooktop and electric ovens.

Yes, DawnNYS, mine has an oven window, & the knobs for the stovetop coil burners will all actaully

rotate 360 degrees.

I no longer remember the brands, but when I was looking, there were at least 2 or 3 that featured electric ovens with gas burners. I was tempted, but finally decided that the additional cost of that feature added to the price for having a gas line run into the kitchen, I could continue to cook with all electric. Down through the years, I've operated with both and much prefer an electric oven over a gas oven so a good even baking oven is always my primary focus.

That's about the same era as mine... I have an old Frigidaire double oven... can't even get service!

About 15 years ago we finally found someone who knew what it was and could fix it... he was about 80 at the time. Tried to replace it, but it's 60" wide and the kitchen is basically built around it!
