"Woke up this morning in a wonderful old Victorian inn where Marti Ladd fed us fresh blintzes while she told hilarious stories about the Hollywood folks who’ve stayed with her. She says the blintzes are an old family recipe, and they’re light, with an oddly seductive flavor that comes on at the end. “Can you guess the secret ingredient?” she asked.

“Onion?” I said, realizing that was what I’d been tasting.

“That’s it!” she cried. “You rub the pan with half an onion between each crepe.”

Loved perusing this link, so interesting and very timely, as I am reading Save Me the Plums.

Thanks for posting, some of the recipes made me shiver, like eating tongue. tacos....Ewww. I used to have a wonderful housekeeper from Mexico and she told me how much she hated these. Her story about how she was introduced to them was very visual in my mind. It brought back a memory of a date I had as a young woman. My date took me to a very old family Italian restaurant in Arcata, CA called The Big 4. Excellent food served in individual booths, with curtains, so one was completely private. My date ordered an appetizer which I really liked. When I asked the waitress if it was bologna, she told me it was tongue.
