FRC: Shrimp - heavy iodine (or something) flavor? Please help ;)

I cooked the IQF (individually quick frozen) raw Gulf shrimp I bought from the (fancy) specialty market twice now with surprising results. The first attempt - shrimp and grits - were truly awful. Seemed like it was the shrimp but I was thinking that I might have overcooked them for the odd flavor. This second attempt, sautéed w/garlic and spice for shrimp tacos, also awful. The shrimp taste like iodine to me, and smell like it as well. Defrosted, they look good in color and texture. Does anyone have any insight, please? If there is something I can do, I still have over a pound frozen. Colleen

Can it be assumed that you deveined them, Colleen?

If not that is probably the flavor problem

No, very clean

They were taken from the store's stock so no packaging. I looked up IQF and realize that they are ice coated which I believe is different. Maybe there is some chemical in the ice that is coating each individual shrimp. Colleen

Yes, C, most probably. Old, chemically enhanced, Gulf brown shrimp

This is not a slight taste/odor. These are inedible. Just didn't plan for/expect this to happen. smileys/smile.gif C
