After I heard a lady talk about the fresh water shrimp coming from Asia....

at a meeting a couple of months ago, I have become much more educated and watched where my seafood is coming from and refusing to buy any that is not from the waters off the US or South America. Then to confirm it, I met some foodies that travel to Asia quite often and their stories only cemented my stand on it. After hearing about the conditions of things, I don't want any of that seafood whatsoever!

Yes, I stopped about 6 months ago. It was difficult to find alternatives here then but I've noticed

that it's getting a bit easier now.

I really worry about what does not come from Canada or the US, in terms of food. Even with the dreaded globalization that is inevitable in France, there will be another region that initiates concern.

But it's not just the fish, canned and bottled stuff, dried mushrooms, really scary. I've never

paid a lot of attention to product origins, except for fish, to which I just recently started paying attention. I naively thought that if it was available, it was safe. I will definitely read more now. Most of the Asian ingredients in my pantry are from Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam or Thailand, I do have dried shiitakes from China. They were purchased from Costco or BJ's.

It should say on the sack. I think a lot of the fish is packed in China. Sometimes it

will say from what waters it was fished and might be packed somewhere else, if I remember correctly. Here in Florida, we are fortunate to be able to get the Key West pink shrimp periodically. It comes in frozen and when available, I buy it in bulk and vac-pak it.

we get the Key West shrimp too and I love them. they're so good. I only buy fish that

is wild caught and fairly local. of course, living in a fishing village makes that easy but the selection is somewhat limited. lots of fresh salmon, ling cod and halibut year round and tuna in season.

I won't purchase any fish that's farm raised or out of country.

Yep, flat. yikes!! do I have to give up garlic?? will try the natural food market or grow my own.

I wouldn't worry so much about the garlic as it's not processed. And supposedly our government is

keeping out the contaminated items, but it was such a shock to me to read that they would try to get them through again. It just pays to be aware and read labels and make better choices when available. I don't have a pet, so the I just thought "how terrible" when I read about the contamination, then I read that human food may be contaminated and it really hit me. My two-year old grandson loves apple juice and drinks so much of it, really makes you think.

I found fresh U.S. shrimp, finally. Out of the four grocery stores that are close to home

I found one that carries it. At $16.88/lb or 21/25 count, I will not be cooking at as often as I would like to. Oh well, at least I found some.

That's too bad, the price I mean, but I seriously doubt it was fresh. I think all

shrimp that is sold away from docks is shipped frozen. Check the seafood freezer cabinets. Emeril used to have a line of Louisiana shrimp sold in 1 lb bags, not sure if Katrina changed that. You might also check the warehouse clubs, but I think a lot of their fish is from China.

Perhaps if people complained the the markets and made their preferences known, the markets would be more particular about where the seafood comes from.
