Fun idea for a gag birthday cake.

I didn't find the recipe, but I assume one just makes a round cake (two bowls fitted togehter), hollows out the center, fills it with the goodies, assemble, ice, and wait for the pinataesque overflow.

Or - you could pipe a thick ring of frosting on one layer and then fill with candy

and then frost as usual. Definitely wouldn't be a copious amount like in the pic but would still be fun.

Or a dacquoise or marzipan ring could support the upper layer while creating the hiding place.

I thought "pinata!" too. I think a jellyroll cake cut into strips and molded in a bowl would work.

That would leave the center hollow right from the get-go.
