FYI fruit recall: Costco, Trader Joes, Sam's Club, Kroger etc

I am getting tired of recalls like this especially from Trader Joe's and

Costco. These are supposed to be companies we can trust.

I think we (a collective term) brought this on ourselves. We want everything available all the time.

Instead of waiting until steamy July to FINALLY cut into a red, ripe watermelon; instead of looking forward to the first crisp apple and KNOW by virtue of that crunchy taste that it is FALL; instead of waiting for a fresh asparagus omelet during spring...we have come to expect the grocer to carry perfect specimens of every fruit and vegetable all year long. We demand it.

So that is what sellers are giving us. If that means they have to go around the world to buy the product from a country that has no restraints on what goes into growing it, at least strawberries will be available to their customers.

Until we're willing to wait for seasonal foods again, until we're willing to buy the bruised but fragrant peaches, until ripe tomatoes stop appearing on menus in December--we will continue to get exactly what we've asked for.

It is not the foodies of the world who want this, it is those who do not appreciate

the seasons and what wonderful bounties we get with each season. Someone at our Farmer's Market was complaining they could not find broccoli and jicama last Saturday. I looked the person face on and said "they are not in season!" I just got a blank stare back. Sheesh!

I think your are right Orchid, it will not change....they will keep demanding spring lamb in the the dead of winter, along with cardboard tasting heirloom tomatoes!

Marilyn, I have printed out what you said so beautifully and have it near my computer and phone

to quote you when I need to.

You hit the nail on the head! Just finished reading Dan Barber's The Third Plate, really enjoyed it

He goes into a lot of the same planting/rotations, expectations, etc. Good read, and as a fairly regular diner at Stone Barns, it was fun to get the back story.

It is - our stone fruit season started a bit early this year - usually end of May/first of June.

This recall is for in-season US-grown stone fruits.

I do agree with the sentiments above - but that is not the case with this particular recall.

I was referring to "imported" vs "local". Of course spring lamb is in season in New Zealand. smileys/bigsmile.gif

My rant wasn't about this specific recall...it was the expectation of food out of season.

And how that affects the growing, shipping, retail and culinary aspects.

Scootch on over, honey....may I join you? I'll bring wine. Wine softens confusion, and more. smileys/wink.gif
