I didn't know about the little 'knife flip'

I've been throwing together a salad of grapefruit segments, avocado and red onion (with a honey/rice wine vinegar/oil dressing) and this video made it so easy - my segments are now so good looking!

I have been doing my grapefruits like that for years. I cannot recall which chef

I learned that from but it was called "supreming a grapefruit". I have taught family members and friends how to do that. If you do it over a bowl, you collect the juices. Have fun with it, now that you know how to do it. So fun to perfect!

I have a serrated spoon--the size of a tablespoon--from my mother--which

can separate a grapefruit half and then I can separate the segments. Works perfectly for me.

When grapefruit is cheap I do six at a time -love having a big bowl of icy cold sections with juice

in the fridge. I squeeze the juice from the peel sections & "pith wads"

My MIL used to make a citurs salad for Christmas breakfast. I remember the first time I made

it without knowing this little "supreming" trick - what a mess! Now I don't mind making them at all, far quicker, less waste and more juice in the bowl.

Intestinal bonus: the remains contains all the skin segments in one handy piece. While...

...it is bitter, it is packed with fiber. So do yourself a favor and chew that up. Your colon will send you a thank-you note for not tossing it out.

And the fruit--in comparison--will taste even sweeter.

I have been missing grapefruit (and Deb, a question)

since Dh went on cholesterol meds. We used to go through bags and bags celebrating the holidays and into the new year. I really enjoyed grapefruit juice while on vacation but that just made me want grapefruit more smileys/wink.gif So, because you posted such a helpful video and suggestions - thanks - I'm going to pick up a couple to splurge and practice sectioning for our salad topping.

Deb, are you cooking with full-fat coconut milk? I have 4 Trader Joe cans to share with you if you'd like them. Lunch? Colleen

My hubby has the same cholesterol issues but he does indulge here and there

Thank you for the generous offer of coconut milk but Jerry is not a fan so I almost never use it. Although I tend to use full-fat everything (the only 'light/low fat' product I use is sugar free maple syrup a few times a year. just to add a bit to oatmeal.
)
Lunch - yes! However let me touch base in the coming week or two. I have to book another trip to see my parents in Florida and I'm not sure when I'm going. Also in Chicago in January (we already have our dinner reservations but thanks for new recommendation).

Absolutely!

We have just chosen to eat things that we both can enjoy together. And yes, a grapefruit here and there is doable for Dh. I was surprised at how much I missed the fruit when we have so many others smileys/wink.gif Colleen
