Happy birthday Traca! You should eat cupcakes in a rose garden at the zoo!

Brilliant idea! I took your suggestion and had a fabulous time. Thanks Michaael. smileys/smile.gif

Two highlights:

- Watching a small group of Tibetan monks stroll through the garden, making a video of some sort. Flowing gold and maroon robes and shorn hair set the stage. The "lead" walked slowly along the grassy walkways and conveyed the epitome of serenity.

- As we prepared to leave the garden, a husband and wife with a small child came by, surprised to find the gazebo occupied. We shared the space with them so they could feed the little one. I struck up conversation with dad. He was pale caramel colored with loose curly hair, lean, and stood 6' 6" tall. Normally his height would be a talking point but I was trying to place his ethnicity. Finally, I asked. It turns out, he's from Cameroon, West Africa. His accent threw me too. "I speak several languages." 5, to be exact.
"You're from West Africa? Really?" I know several people from that region and they are black as night. "You're so pale...Are you also East Indian?"
"No. In the Northern parts of Cameroon, you'll see many people who look like me." Who knew?!

Birthday, roses, and a cultural lesson all rolled into one! Perfect day. smileys/smile.gif

I took the ferry across the strait just for the day. Been wanting to do it

since I arrived but learned that it is free on one's birthday, so no more excuses. It was to Port Angeles. Not much there but it was about the trip.

Seattle is the next trip. Different ferry. That I REALLY want to do.

I went into some supermarkets yesterday (there are only 2 there) and am so jealous of the prices of your food. And this was a remote location so I cannot imagine how much less it must be in a vast booming metropolis. I spent 40 years shopping in the US, regularly, for all kinds of things. Our stores are about as good now in terms of choice but your prices still amaze me.

Unfortunately the things I really wanted, the only in US items, I couldn't find.

This sure is a beautiful part of the world.

Happy birthday to us!

What's the US thing you were looking for, but couldn't find? And where are you?

Vancouver or Vancouver Island...or? I must have missed that.

In terms of food, I'm loving fish here. Well, no big surprise. So my favourite

tartar sauce is Old Bay. I had a supply that I'm almost out of.

Oddly we don't get English muffins with 'stuff' in them. I like cinnamon and raisin. I did find a brand that I was not familiar with in WA but not the one I was looking for. A spice mix branded AND named Miami Spice that I had bought in the Caribbean and in Miami...also great on fish. A few other items and some personal bits. I wasn't disappointed as I knew this places was tiny.
