Happy Holidays and a Crisco request...

(No, Steve, not THAT kind of request.)

As mentioned before, I rarely bake. But the hubs begged me to make gingersnaps for part of his gift to his staff (and for him too) so I told him to bring home some of the Crisco sticks.

Crisco sticks come 3 to a pack.

HE BROUGHT HOME 3 PACKS.

I used a stick and a half in a double batch of gingersnaps and now have a mere 7 1/2 sticks left. Gingersnaps are the only cookie I make that uses Crisco, as I normally prefer butter.

Do any of you have an easy cookie that tastes best with Crisco?

Half shortening/half butter makes nice chewy chocolate chip cookies

Also, i keep crisco sticks in the freezer to use along with butter in pie pastry. It cuts in & makes nicer crust when it is frozen. Throw them in a freezer bag before freezing & it keeps a long time.

My hubby prefers oatmeal cookies made with Crisco:

Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies

Makes about 2-1/2 dozen

1 cup flour
1 cup shortening (Crisco)
3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
3 tbl. water
3/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
3/4 tsp. vanilla extract
3-1/2 cups quick cooking oats, uncooked

Preheat oven to 375 deg. Grease large cookie sheets.
Into large bowl, measure all ingredients except oats. With mixer on low speed, beat until well blended, occasionally scraping bowl with rubber spatula. With wooden spoon, stir in oats until well mixed.
Drop dough by heaping tablespoonfuls about 2” apart onto cookie sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes until barely golden. With spatula, carefully remove cookies to wire racks to cool. Store in tightly covered container.

Not a cookie, but the Good-for-Almost-Everything Pie Dough in T&T uses 1/2 n 1/2

It's really good for a nice flaky pie dough.

You always could return the extra to the store though, can't you?

When I was a kid we used shortening with all the baked goods.

Ha! I also had a funny story re: Crisco.. Years ago, I found a rec on Gails for Lemon cookies

They looked really easy and were getting rave reviews. I asked dh to purchase the ingredients at the store. He brought home Crisco oil.
Unfortunately, I do not the name nor how to search our old site. But they were raved as delectable easy lemon cookies. I never did get a chance to make them. Perhaps someone remembers the recipe or has ability to search?

Good luck with your crisco. : )

Good idea. I used to make Crisco's fried chicken recipe & did it with my electric skillet.

Strain & refrigerate it & it can be used several times.
