Happy independence day to everyone.

You are so great, desertjean, to remind us what the FOURTH is really all about ~ Breaks my heart

for every soldier and their families who suffer such a tragedy.

That must have been very heart wrenching to witness desertjean.

You described the scene very well and I almost feel as if I was there.

Yes, we must not forget why we celebrate this national holiday. I hope you manage to enjoy tomorrow.

Regards.

I have to share a moment of sadness here

My office faces the highway so I get to watch all of the traffic that comes through our small town. Many times this is a real joy. I get to see the Marines and Sailors that come home from Iraq. They roar into town, hanging out the windows of buses. With police escorts, their sirens wailing, the smiles are huge. Cars and trucks follow, honking their horns. Folks step out to wave, hold signs and welcome them home.

Today was different. I could hear the bikes coming and knew immediately what was happening. The Patriot Riders were escorting the body of a fallen sailor, killed in Afghanistan last month.

I stepped outside to pay my respects and there were others out there as well. The roofers working next door in 108 degree heat even stopped what they were doing. I bawled like a baby for this young sailor I had never met.

It reminded me very clearly of why we celebrate 4th of July. I wish everyone a safe holiday as we celebrate our freedoms. My heart and prayers go out to that young man's family and all the others who have sacrificed so that we can fully enjoy our freedom.

I must also tell you how grateful I am every day that my own sailor man came through his 20 years of service safely.

A stark reminder that 'freedom' is not "free". It is won and maintained by the sacrifices of heroes

who stand in our place, so we don't have to. Thank a soldier, marine, sailor or airman today.

When you see the American flag today, notice that the stripes begin and end, top and bottom, with RED.

Happy Independence Day,

Michael

We're just finished w/2 4th of July community concerts

as part of a choral group. We always do a salute to the members of the Armed Services. It's been a great way to spend the 4th!
