Happy New Year from a winter wonderland. I am so thrilled to be in a dream place.....

fresh snow and loads of it the day we arrived in this quaint village full of sweet chalets high up in the French Alps. My winter ski clothes bought on line are just perfect. My sister lent me a ski jacket..... other than that all clothes are fine. The night we arrived we climbed 300 plus steps to a restaurant for fondue, raclette and brassier...a small coal fire over which we cooked steak. Started with tomato soup. The chalet is very quaint ...all wood of course. After the meal two of the youngsters took a ride down the slope on trays...it seemed such fun this 60 plus ol' duck climbed a third of the way up and slid down on the tray....what fun.

Next day was perfect for my first ski lesson. ..on the slope with all those wee kiddos.....I carried the skis, fought my way into the horrid boots and got on the skis...after three gos to grab the rope to be pulled up I finally rode that rope like a pro and by the end of the lesson I was feeling so confident...the rain sadly started and by NY eve it still had not stopped. We dinned at a great restaurant where the set menu included mushroom veloute, and caramalised cherry tomatoes,,,these were excellent. The main was tartuflette (I thin it is spelt) potatoes with lardons and Roblochon cheese, cold meats and greens. Dessert was a plate of wee tasters incl...choc mousse, lemon sorbet, lemon meringue,

and loads of champers.

NY day dawned fabulous but I can now talk with knowledge...the slopes were a bit slippy...I went to my 2nd lesson

Drove myself I did, through the snowed/sludgy, very icy roads with a manual (which my niece could not manage, I took over from her, some things us oldies can do).....that in itself is a feather in my cap!!!!

and with no one there did a run on my own....EEEEEE, I went too fast even though I turned and snow ploughed and did not fall etc I got a bit scared (old bones you know) so waited for the instructor...and did not have a good lesson, I could not get anything right...OH dear...anyway after he left I did a number of runs on my own and even coped with a slalom of three cones, over and over....maybe tomorrow I may make at least one ride on the real run...green I think it is. I really hope I can get there asap. I am so thrilled, it is such fun......wish I did this years ago.

Today we started with brunch with truffled scrambled eggs, smoked salmon etc and ended with excellent roast lamb and used the truffle oil in mashed tats.

All this exercise and all this eating...not sure they are offsetting one another.

Happy New Year again everyone!

Joanie! It sounds so wonderful...what is the name of the village? And what are champers??

I am so happy for you. Clearly, you are making the most of this adventure. Thanks for the update.

Sounds like you are in the Jura?

We stayed at a wonderful little inn with a Michelin starred restaurant included, in Malbuisson. It wasn't winter, but was a great place to stay and wander.

You brought back wonderful memories with the tartiflette, raclette and fondue.

Enjoy your holiday!

Simply divine! Perfect weather, perfect company...

champagne flowing, and perfect French Alpine cuisine. And classic Savoy tartiflette in the evening...< < < . sigh. > > >.

Please tell me there was a fire and snifters of coganc to follow up...

What a lovely vacation. I had to look up Tartiflette. Sounds wonderful! Glad your clothes have

worked out!

Absolutely and then we also have an Estonian (one of the nephew's

girlfriends) guest who brought some "Vana Tallinn" I must say beats Jagermeister hands down)...snow started again, is there anything prettier.
Oh the new and fun things I am experiencing

The village is

Le Grande Bornand, not one of the most well known resorts, and it is fab.

A goose on the loose having a wonderful time! Good to hear you're having such a great time Joanie!

I almost made it to Chamonix by rail but it was getting too late in the afternoon so my friend and I went back to Geneva.

What I did see of the alps was unforgettable and the mini stop along the way to have coffee and chocolate at a little village near a train station.

Enjoy Joanie and don't break a leg!

When did you do that? Must have been spectacular. My Husband said exactly....

that..goose on the loose.
It is such fun.

Oh geez, the 80's. My girlfriend and I flew to Paris for a couple of days and took

the TGV to Marsailles and then hopped on the scenic local train along the Mediterranean up to Nice for about a week (oh and a bus trip to Grasse!). On the return, we took a night train from Nice to Geneva for about three days before heading back to Paris.

I still have the wooden coat hanger from Hotel Du Midi in Geneva - LOL

Have fun Lucegoose!

Ducky
