Has anyone been on a diet to lower triglycerides specifically? (more)

The list of foods I can eat is pretty small. No apples, oranges, grapes; no bread, potatoes, rice, pasta. Well you get the idea.

Watch out for catsup.

After my brother had a heart attack a week before his 30th birthday (two others had 'waited' until they were in their late 30s) we had our teenage son checked. He wasn't 17 but, for his age group, he had high bp and high triglycerides. We went through nutritional counseling and learned the ingredient we needed to look for was high fructose corn syrup, a major ingredient in many foods, especially catsup. (There are a couple of name brand catsups that offer organic versions that don't have that ingredient.) Poor kid had to cut out all sports/energy drinks which is the lifeblood of teenagers these days.

The other thing we were told was to watch out for are foods that list themselves as "Zero grams transfats" because, by law, they can actually have up to .5 grams of transfats per serving and still be considered Zero. Since the serving size listed is often smaller than what we actually consume, those so-called "zero transfats" add up fast.

Thanks, Marilyn. That's a great list.

I had thought we were pretty well educated as far as nutrition went, even tho we don't always follow it smileys/smile.gif But catsup? And Gatorade? Who'd a thunk it? Then I took a Cal/OSHA course on heat and found out that employers and supervisors are actually required to discourage employees from drinking sports drinks (gatorade, monster, etc) as they can actually do more harm than good on a hot day. (It's in the CA heat regulations.)

Truth be told, my son has always been a healthier eater than I am. He'll go back for seconds on veggies while I'm slipping mine under a napkin or to the dog so that I can head straight to dessert. Those sports drinks, they drink them like water, and that is what does him in. It hits both his bp and his numbers. Although he swears it was his spanish teacher...
