has anyone done a small turkey on a gas grill rotisserie?

We rostiss chickens all the time. But turkeys are sacred. They're for filling up the house with

aromas of Christmas and Thanksgiving. The smell is a huge part of the enjoyment for us, so we are just traditionalists about turkey. We'll eat it in bits at other times but not the whole bird.

But also, we regretted being unable to have stuffing with it when it was on the Q.

We both agreed we would not do it that way again.

Funny you should ask ......

Last weekend I was cleaning out the freezer. There were two birds in there from last November. You know, when Fred Meyer's has that "spend $100 and you get a free turkey" sale in early November, somehow we end up with a few in the freezer. Anyway, I took one out and when defrosted, I tried it on my new gas Brinkman 4 burner grill. Of course its too large for the rotisserie, so, I put it in an old cookie sheet with edges about 3/4 inch high, set it in the middle and fired up the two end burners. I kept the heat between 275 and 300 degrees. Basically I left it alone for several hours. I did not cover it, but I did have to baste the fat and juices a couple times.

I was not too concerned about this bird to be honest. I just wanted to cook it to get it out of the freezer, and to try one on the grill. I have to say it came out wonderfully moist and tasty. Of course, the skin was a beautiful brown color and quite tight. But, the best part of it was the juice I collected when I basted, and the brown stuff I collected when I cleaned the pan. That stuff produced some of the best gravy I have ever made, not to mention turkey soup the second day.

I think I would do it again and, keeping with my short lived tradition, I will not fuss much over it.

I hope you are enjoying the great weather. I welcomed my first Grandson into the world last week at Providence and am still in that "ga ga" state of mind. Things are good here ....

i have one of those in my freezer too.

I might have to bring it out this weekend and do it on the grill. No fuss sounds perfect to me! Congrats on the new grandbaby! Enjoy being a granddaddy, life is good.

Ang, I have one of the large capacity

"set it and forget it" rotisseries, and when I do a turkey or chickens for that matter,on it, they come out wonderfully. I bought this appliance not knowing of it's infommercial, but on the advice of a poster at Gail's, Kiwi Chris, I believe. All of the meat I have done on it has been fantastic. Because I bought the large one it can be outside or in the garage, and not heat up the house.

turkies or grandsons? and brian, the little bundle of joy will change your life...

such a joy.

I have cooked smaller ones on a grill, like Brian in Alaska (see below), on a weber black apple...

...with charcoal, on a brinkman water smoker (again with charcoal), and on a free-standing Farberware rotisserie (electric).

All were very good!

Michael
