Has anyone else noticed that the pimento in a green olive

is no longer a pimento, but a gelatinous disgusting red thing. It is like they took a real pimento ground it up, mixed it with gelatin, and piped it into the olive hole. I have noticed this with more than one brand. Anyone else?

Oh accckkkkkkkkkk. Are there any commercial brands that do not do this heinous thing?

I am fairly limited in my local markets, but if there is a good one, I will pick them up next time I hit Kansas City.

hey dawn! i just got this email from mel berger of mel's olives...

Not only are my martini Olives Stuffed with a real slice of Pimento, but they are soaked in a vermouth brine.

Therefore, you only have to keep your gin or vodka in your FREEZER; And, when you are ready to make your martini, you just add my olives to the freezer cold beverage and presto a perfect martini. No stirring, no shaking, just instant martini when you want one.

In addition to the convenience, I guarantee my Olives. I ship on an OPEN account basis, and If they are not all that I say, you simply throw them out and let me know.

Sincerely,

Mel from Mel’s Olives

Also a key ingredient in disposable diapers. Isn't that thought appetizing. smileys/tongue.gif

Just recieved my order from Mel's. They're GREAT!!! Thanks for the lead. . .

oh, and as it turns out, Mel's is SO close to my home (I had no idea when I placed the internet order) Mel himself delivered them to my door! Talk about service.

Get 'em while the getting is good!

Okay...I just bought some Santa Barbara Olives with Blue Cheese. We

had some from my step-daughter and they were great. I bought some, and I heard my husband yell in disgust, they had done the same thing with the blue cheese...GUAR GUM. If you see this word on any olive label, do not buy them.

At my local Vons I just bought a jar of the colossal Spanish olives by Mezzetta

and they have the real pimento in them.

My favorite olives come from a place called The Spanish Table and are stuffed with

shrimp. Oh my....these were a revelation! Not super briny and although subtle, the shrimp flavor really came through. My friend is the wine manager at the Spanish Table and she served these at tapas party. It took great restraint on my part to not finish off the entire bowl!

Catherine says their best selling olive is stuffed with lemon. I bet that would be good too...and look forward to trying them once I get over my addiction to those shrimp-stuffed olives. smileys/smile.gif

I just looked at the Mazzetta Spanish olives with pimento, tonight, and on my jars, it says

the dreaded ingredient, guar gum, and minced pimentoes. If you see guar gum as an ingredient in your olives, you are getting the disgusting pimento look-alike that I have been dealing with. I have accepted the fact that I wil have to order online and pay the obnoxious, but true shipping fees. But you know what, that is way cheaper that throwing out bottles of olives. Thanks though.

Rats! My daughter took the jar home so I can't read it... fortunately, I remove the pimento

(or pimento look-alike!) and only used the olives for a recipe I was making. Will look closer next time... it was an awfully big piece of pimento, though, and tasted like the real thing... thanks for the heads-up and I'll check out if it has guar gum when I go to the market this week!
