it was like fudge but with oats in it -- not a layered bar thing, but squares of fudge with oats in it. I'm stumped!

I've never heard of it, but I found one on...

...Anniesrecipes.com

Oatmeal Fudge
1/2 c. canned milk
3 tbsp. cocoa
2 c. white sugar
1/2 c. butter
3 c. oatmeal (quick)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. nuts, chopped (if desired)

Instructions
Mix sugar, cocoa, milk and butter. Bring to boil, stir until sugar is melted, turn off heat. Add oatmeal, vanilla and nuts. Stir well and drop on waxed paper.

And another from recipes.ubr.com:

Oatmeal Fudge

Ingredients

1 Stick butter
2c Sugar
1/2c Milk

Bring to boil and stir while boiling for 3 min. exactly. Remove from burner and add:

1/2c Cocoa
2c Oatmeal
1/2c Coconut
1/2c Pecans
1 ts Vanilla
1 pinch of salt

Directions
1.Mix quickly and spoon out onto wax paper.

2.Make sure you get all of your ingredients together first because you must mix the second half of the stuff in as soon as you take the boiling mixture off the stove.

3.It really is good and very sweet.

4.I usually make just a half recipe.

5.Happy cooking!

Yeah, this was my initial thought as I've made these for years... but he swears they were baked

in a big rectangular pan and cut in squares. I'm going to make some of these up and I bet his memory is just off a little *g*

Here's my version of them, called No Bakes and they have peanut butter

No Bake Cookies

2 C sugar
3 Tbsp Cocoa
1/4 C unsalted butter
1/2 C Milk

1/2 C Peanut Butter
1 Tsp Vanilla
3 C Oatmeal

Lay out wax paper. Boil first four ingredients one minute. Remove from heat . Add remaining ingredients. Drop quickly onto wax paper. Let cool.

Makes 48 +/-

mine is similar but TWICE as much cocoa, pb and butter (I tweaked it over the years *g*)

Southern Boiled Cookies (aka No Bake Cookies)

1 cup EACH granulated sugar & brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup milk
1/3 cup cocoa powder, WELL rounded
3 cups quick oats (you can also use regular)
1 cup peanut butter
1 tsp. vanilla

In saucepan, bring sugars, butter, milk and cocoa powder to a boil; boil for 1 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in oats, peanut butter and vanilla. Cover with lid and let set until you can drop by small spoonfuls onto waxed paper without it spreading out.

I think you're right about it being the no-bake fudge cookies. I love these. my first cooking

project in Girl Scouts. it could be poured into a pan and cut into squares.

NOT Fudge!.. my Grandma's no-bake cookies

She sent a similar recipe to me when I was starting out as a kiddie cook.
