Has anyone frozen turnips? I have 5 pounds from the farm and we can't eat that much!

Although the CSA that I belong to shut down 3 weeks ago for the winter, with this wacky weather the crops were still going. So this week they invited the members to come back one last time for some veggies.

9 heads of broccoli

4 heads of cauliflower

2 small bok choy

5 pounds of white hakurei turnips

The turnips are about the size of a radish and some are a bit larger - the size of a good sized plum.

I have a foodsaver so I could vacuum pack - but would I blanche first? THey'll most likely be used in stews and soups, but will freezing mush them too much even for that?

Thanks,

Tess

They keep forever in the crisper (or root cellar)...

Turnips, cabbage, and potatoes were the tubers and vegetables that people depended on to store over the winter for food in the old days with out refrigerators. I've kept turnips for 2-3 months in the crisper before using.

When I gardened in Minnesota this is what I did with turnips and carrots

I learned this from a wise elderly gardener- fill a wooden crate 1/3 full with good clean sand. poke carrots and turnips in it then fill so that only the tops of the veggies stick out then store the crates in a very cool place so they don't freeze. An unheated basement worked great. The veggies lasted all winter and tasted fresh out of the garden.

Yes. Part of me hates this, and then the other part who...

loves rutabagas is happy that they've found a way to bring them to market and I can buy them.

I love doing a buttery baked celery root and rutabaga puree to serve with roasts in winter.
