Has anyone made a polka dots inside cake using the cake balls?

I haven't done polka dots, but did cupcakes with shaped pieces of cake baked inside

I was concerned about the texture, being "twice baked" cake, but it was fine. Not sure with the longer baking time of a cake vs cupcakes if it would be any different.

My pieces were on the small side, though - probably 1.5 square inches.

Gay's is a good tutorial. Here's another: Gisene's puts a red heart inside a cake

(I'm making mine next Friday with a red star...recipe linked; photos to follow)

Key things:
slightly underbake the colored "stamped out" cake so that it doesn't overbake when added to full-size cake pan. In your case...cake balls...in my case, it will be a flat cake pan that I'll punch stars out with a cookie cutter.

Put untinted cake batter on the bottom of the pan, stand the colored pieces as close as possible, then PIPE the remaining untinted batter around the pieces to fill in the nooks and crannies.

If it's not a mirrored object (top/bottom are identical) such as a HEART shape, place the TOP of the heart in the pan first and have the BOTTOM of the heart facing up. Then pipe in the rest of the batter: This is because your cake will be flipped when finished and then the heart will display in the correct position when the cake is sliced.

Yes, Gay, that is the one I'm trying to duplicate. The cake batter was all wrong, though.

It was SO thick - like chocolate chip cookie dough. I added almost 1/2 cup more liquid to it, and it was still very thick. I went with it anyway and it barely rose and was so dense I chucked it all in the trash.

I was just hoping someone had done it with homemade cake batter and how it turned out. My only fear is that they warn the cake balls will float if the batter is not dense enough.

And yes, the cake mix was fresh...I always check expiry dates on those things smileys/smile.gif

I'm curious, have you just tried a squeeze bottle of batter?

I know it won't be as perfect looking, but sounds a whole lot easier to use a squeeze bottle of alternate colored batter and dollop it in the pans to make the dots.
