Has anyone purchased the "Big Green Egg" or anything similar?

Go see Dave Bucholtz @ Cool Springs Publix Meat Dept.....

he used to own a butcher shop in Brentwood and swore by the green egg. I'll also check with a fellow Eastern Star member - I think he has one and LOVES it.

I feel the same as you - EXPENSIVE and looks like a pretty small cooking surface.

Thanks, Melissa. Is he the one who can bbe a bit

ornery? I don't mind, as long as he knows his "stuff"!
I work with the gal who's dh is the manager. Nice people.

Denice, we purchased a Kamado, not the Big Green Egg brand, second hand, in 1968...

from a Marine who had purchased it in Japan and got tired of moving it around. I almost weep when I remember the taste of chicken or ribs cooked on it. There is nothing more delicious! We became Kamado-less when I backed into it in my carport in 1974, and it shattered into a dozen pieces. I've kind of lost my enthusiasm for outdoor grilling, (got tired of smelling like smoke), and DH isn't a chef, so we don't use one any more. Ours was red, not green. But if you want the finest-tasting grilled food you'll ever put in your mouth, buy one!

Do a Google search for "Kamado", and you might find some other sources. Maybe even find a used one for sale on e-Bay?
