have any of you cooked up shaggy manes? they're popping up all over and i hear they're tasty...

yes, I cook them on their own as they tend to be "inky" and you may not want to

combine them until the ink is absorbed. the younger ones are less inky. they can be strong too, as I recall. I didn't cook any last year so I don't remember.

are you absolutely sure they're shaggy manes? I can look them up in my shroom book when I get home to see if there are any "look alikes" you might have to watch out for.

happy shrooming smileys/smile.gif

thanks randi. dh assures me they're the real thing and have no lookalikes but those do sound

much like 'famous last words'. if you have a chance to look them up that'd be great. we have had a look on the net and are pretty certain tho' you can never be too sure! think we'll give them a try tomorrow, maybe jeff should eat first smileys/wink.gif

I checked my guide book and you're good to go! they didn't list any look alikes

and they say they are "choice". the young ones, before they look really shaggy, taste like asparagus. have fun and happy dinning smileys/smile.gif

yep, they're mushrooms. i'm no mycothingy, but we're in hardwood forest, mostly maple, and they're

growing in more open areas, like along our driveway. they're popping up through pretty hard ground, which is amazing because they're so fragile when you touch them! they're kinda long, then they open up like an umbrella as they age, then they turn all slimey and black like primordial ooze (which of course the dogs paws gravitate to). i guess you have to catch them when they're really fresh. finally going to try some tonight, we'll see how they taste!
