Have any of you tried any of these pizzas? (I can only dream). Food & Wine's Best U.S. Pizza Spots

I've tried the Appiza Scholls out of Portland. Worth the wait. They close when they run out of dough

Can't believe I can respond to this - New Haven, CT: Frank Pepe Pizzeria

I went there with some friends. The pizza was good but to be honest, if you serve me a thin crusted pizza baked in an Italian oven, chances are I'll eat eat till I drop smileys/bigsmile.gif

Went to Co. this year with DH and family -- fabulous! Also Frank's in New Haven is wonderful.

Both have that neighborhood atmosphere that is so comfortable! Frank's is the pizza you dream about, more traditional. Co. walkable from DH's house is innovative and serves great salads too. YUM to both!

I've eaten at Pizzeria Picco a few times, it's close

to where I live. Was there for lunch a few months ago and walked out without eating.
For some reason they changed the wine glasses and now for the same price as before, you get the dixie cup size glass.............. Not.
The pizza is good, but there are other places I like better.
And as weird as it sounds, the soft serve with olive oil and sea salt is so good! I would go back just for that.

I tried several times

when I lived in the area but every time there was a huge line of people waiting at Pizza Bianco and if I recall correctly, they don't take reservations. I remember reading that the owner started as a chef at a World Market where they served hot food. They don't do that here at our local World Market/CostPlus.

I have been to the original Grimaldis in Brooklyn. Went midweek during the day and even then there was a line going down the street. They still do the coal fired ovens. Really great pizza.
Hate to say it but pretty much any local pizzeria in NY is head and shoulders above pizza in other parts of the country. Not sure if it is the water, the humidity, tomatoes... My Humble Opinion of course... But it's true... Years ago I went to Vincenzos at the Venetian in Las Vegas. It was like a cafeteria where Vincenzos was just one option but even so, best pizza that I've had outside of NYC. I had pizza at Wolfgang Puck's place too and it was fancy with gourmet sausage. Very tasty but I'd still prefer a traditional NY slice.

a couple more..

Not sure if it still there but on Steinway street in Astoria/Queens NY there is a place called Rizzos. This was a really interesting pizza that was served square and it seemed to me to be heavy on the parmesan on top which was top melted. Very good pizza.

And in Biddeford Maine (about 1/2 hour south of Portland) there was this place called Michaels. They also did a pizza similar to Rizzos but they made it on a conveyer belt which ran the pizza under one of those raclette style heating elements. Also very good pizza.
