Have you visited these places in Northern CA?

Oh darn, after reading the subject line I was all excited to say yes,

we spent an absolutely fabulous week on a house boat on Lake Shasta. Oh well...;0)

I LOVE the way that sounds... "I spent a week on a houseboat..." I have no

idea where Lake Shasta is, but it just sounds relaxing and fun!

I have not been to any of those places...however, many don't seem to know

that there is much more to see and do in northern California beginning in Redding Ca and heading north. It really is God's country, less traffic, clean air, lots of lakes, mountains, and great food. Of course I should mention that CA has been in a drought for a few years and it finally hit this area last year. We have very low water in Lake Shasta and other lakes, plus zero snow in our mountains. Even majestic Mt. Shasta has no snow. Sad.

I have heard the Shed is great, and so is the Oakland spice shop

not sure of the other places, the last 2 years I haven't really been doing anything other than rehab at home etc.

I've never heard of the SF places, I will have to investigate them sometime. I do recommend the Tcho chocolate factory tour and the Dandelion chocolate shop, the Ferry Building of course but just remember the Saturday farmer's market day is pure mayhem (and fun).Spicely in SF is fun, it's on Market Street in FiDi, I like them. Also Daiso in Japantown for kitchen stuff that is super cheap. There are tons of neighborhood places to visit that are worth, the 24th street corridor and Valencia Street in the Mission are fantastic (albeit a touch on the edgy side safety wise).

Wow, Karen, we used to trail our sailboat up to Shasta and spend a week there

so much fun, sorry to hear about the water situation being so low. I grew up during the drought years and hope it rains soon. The mountaineers must be happy about the lack of snow on Shasta though, for climbing...

Dought is everywhere here - Gov will call for drought emerg soon

I heard him say they were just getting the paperwork together. The drought is the worst I can recall so expect we will all have water rationing again like back in the day. The other night on the news they showed a local reservoir at 16% full. Think I mentioned my lemon tree has tiny walnut sized lemons as a result. I cant recall ever having to water that tree, so it just goes to show how dry the ground water level is.

The high today is predicted to be 77F and 80+ at the beach. This is basically unheard of for NoCA this time of year.

I have not been to the Barlow yet, but the individual stores(more)

restaurants, etc are very good.
This would be a way to enjoy much of Sonoma County's bounty in one place.

We water our lemon tree Maria, and have it on a feeding schedule too

last year we got over 500 lemons, this year we got 267, and saved most of them. Just juiced the last batch this morning. Most of them were huge, 5 times larger than store bought ones, some bigger. We had it wrapped with frost cloth but could not wrap the very top, we lost half our tree. I don't know if the branches are dead but will have a tree guy come in soon to trim and give us a health report.
We are already looking at ways to conserve water and reuse gray water....it is not pretty. For sure, we will be letting the lawns go, in favor of saving our trees and watering our veggie/herb garden.

thanks for the info

Of the things you mentioned, I have only been to the Ferry Building. I stay at a condo within walking distance and it is one of the first places I go. I always take as much as I can carry back to the condo to enjoy over several days. I'm at the cheese festival on Saturday but might go to the FM on Thursday, if they still have one on Thursdays.

I'll be by myself so won't go anywhere that might be unsafe. Are the 24th street corridor and Valencia Street in the Mission safe during the day?

I've been to a kitchen store in Chinatown but don't think I've been in Japantown. I'm really not sure because I have a poor sense of direction and sometimes just walk until I see something interesting. When I am exhausted I rest while studying the way back to the condo on my phone.

I adore northern CA

I usually stay in SF and make day trips north from there.

Central Oklahoma had a wet fall so our drought status has improved. However, western Oklahoma is still in an extreme drought. It has been very difficult for all of agriculture but especially the cattle ranchers. Many sold a significant portion of their stock as they had no water and limited feed. It was difficult for them both financially and emotionally.

Water has certainly become an issue, hasn't it?

I've been watering it too - now

I don't normally need to though - it's decades old. Mine came through the frost as I was able to cover it. Mine is a dwarf so looks more like a big bush than a tree. My friend has a bigger one at her beach house that grew like crazy and has hundreds, right now I've got at least 100 I guess -- it always is enough to keep me in lemons year round, though I'd like to put a 2nd one in (I have visions of orange/lime/lemon/fig trees espaliered on the fence out back). This one is in the front yard and I've had some thieves in the night before.

Mine normally has large ones too, just depends on how long I leave them on. I just made curd and the recipe called for 4+ and only took 2 of my meyers -- I love my tree, giving one is always my go to house warming gift.

My lemon tree was a dwarf when I bought it, but something happened

it is over 15 feet tall now, but soon will be about half that size. Love my lemon tree.
