forgot the sugar. The "cake" is made only from almond meal, eggs and orange zest. Could that be a base for some sort of confection? I was thinking of covering it with icing sugar and serving small wedges with fruit salad.

BTW, I remade the cake because I had promised to bring same to a lunch with friends the next day.

 
Absolutely. Why not use it as a base for peaches. You could put a pastry cream over rounds of it

(I guess that would involve slicing it horizontally) then top with peaches and almond scented whipped cream. You could compress the base a bit, or not.

Or slice again like that and soak with triple sec and do the same.

Or chunk it up with peaches and almond-scented whipped cream, topped with toasted almonds.

Or make a gelatin-based mousse to put between layers and set i up in the fridge.
