christmas crafting/potluck (doubt we do crafting)

9 ladies attending - it's a meet-up so most won't know each other. I've been there once before but the group was much larger (summer) and folks were asked to share what they were bringing online so everyone could see. This time nothing in the way of assignments or ideas of what others are bringing are listed.

So, going in blind...knowing it will be at least an all day deal...any ideas on what to bring? Last time I brought a peach pie still warm from the oven -- it was a huge hit so feeling some pressure to do well.

We enjoy Pat's rec's for Crostini Piccanti and Acquasale. I have not made it in a while, but I was

brain storming, thinking it would be fun to bring something green and red. I really enjoy this combination. Actually if you look at the link, there are quite a few fun recipes posted.

Have fun. Makes me smile to think about going to the beach. While it is not really cold here, it certainly is not beach weather! (The fun of having friends over the internet!)

edited to say that when I made them for St. Pats and Valentines, I used a cookie cutter to make fun shaped bread (hearts and 4 leaf clovers).

This is once again on my list to try this year. Rec: Fabulous Fudge Wreath

I have had it on my list a few years, but I really am not a sweet eater, so tend to cross them off the list. Anyway, This looks like fun and sounds relatively easy. Rachel Ray also has a similiar recipe if you want to compare and contrast ingredients / decorations.

Fabulous Fudge Wreath

ingredients
12 ounces DOVE Milk Chocolate - chopped,
1 cup butterscotch chips,
1 14-oz. can sweetened condensed milk,
½ teaspoon vanilla extract,
1 cup Chocolate-Covered Almonds and Cranberry Blend,
Dark Chocolate Leaves - for garnish,
Cinnamon-Dusted Almonds - for garnish,
M&M's™ Premiums - for garnish

Preparation
1. Butter an 8"-round cake pan. Wrap the empty can of condensed milk in plastic wrap and place in the middle of the cake pan to form the hole in the wreath.

2. Over medium heat, melt the chocolate, butterscotch chips, condensed milk and vanilla in a medium saucepan for about 3 to 4 minutes, or until smooth. Add nut and cranberry blend.

3. Pour fudge into the cake pan to form the wreath (an uneven, bumpy texture on top is desirable).

4. Decorate the fudge with leaves, almonds and M&M's® Premiums for a splash of color.

5. Set the wreath in the refrigerator until firm (1½ to 2 hours).

6. Remove the can from the center of the wreath and loosen the sides and bottom with a spatula.

Not to be dumb, but I wonder if Nestles semi-sweet morsels could be

used instead of the Dove candies? What do you think? It looks like a nice idea...

How about another pie? Sounds like you make good ones! Or also...

- rum cake (drizzled with rum and topped with whipped cream)

- Christmas cookies

- white chili in a crockpot, if you want to stay with "savory"

I make the Rachel Ray recipe every year for the guards at the gates on base. it fits nicely in

those red plastic containers that you can find at Walmart, using the wrapped and oiled sweetened condensed milk can as the form for the center of the wreath. decorate it and you can put the lid on, tape a plastic knife to the outside and the guards can cut off slivers whenever they want and it can sit out for days, if it lasts that long. it really is a snap to make.

I'm not overly fond of butterscotch chips and left them out once, but they really do add a creamy

buttery touch to the fudge.

I think over the years sometime they have changed the butterscotch chips

The last time I used them in Hello Dolly bars I found them overwhelming and obnoxious. I don't think they used to be so strong and artificial tasting/smelling.

I've made this every year since the 1970's. REC: Foolproof Dark Chocolate Fudge

The Dove presentation looks lovely!

I first tasted this at my Aunt Mary's on Christmas Eve.

Mother

This was what I grew up with. Haven't made it in a while so I have that on my list for this year.

5 cups sugar
1 1/3 sticks butter
1 large can evaporated milk

Put this on to cook and watch carefully as it sticks easily. Let it boil 8 to 10 minutes.
Pour in
3 pkgs. chocolate chips,
1 pt. marshmallow cream
and nuts.

Beat until chocolate melts. Pour into a greased pan or platter.
