Herb growers??? I know that you need to cut off basil flowers before they

In doing some reading it appears that different plants are sold as oregano and

that some are annual and some are perennial. It sounds like what you had was an annual to me.

Tagging on a basil ? here: why are mine now so anemic looking?

They have gone a pale green. We've had a ton of rain...too much? Should I thin them out? Oh, and I put Miracle Gro on them too. Was that bad?

I cut all my herbs back whenever I feel like it. Today I went out and lopped some of the

flowers off the oregano. My herbs thrive on abuse.

If they're growing in a bunch, thin them out. The problem with basil is the plants are leggy

when young and don't look attractive. So nurseries put a pinch of seed in each pot which forms an adorable chia-pet type tuft of intertwined seedlings.

Never mind the fact that they won't survive that way--their work is done once you made the purchase. It drives me crazy!!

So you should separate them out when very young, or look for a 6-pack with individual plants from a responsible grower.

Plant them 6" apart in the garden and 3-4 inches apart in a pot.

Eeek! I'm only 3 miles from the Florida line, and my basil has some of this yellowing leaves

and these spots. I just dosed it with Miracle Gro yesterday, thinking it needs N. Hmmm...how could I face summer without my fresh basil? Thanks for the heads-up, Curious.

Yes, they probably do need nitrogen, and if you used "regular"

5-10-5 MiracleGro for the herbs, you're going to get more flowers, not more green. You need a higher first number.

Yellowing, I think, is a symptom of iron leaching out from too much watering. Or maybe even from too dry of a climate, although mine just look droopy when we get too little water. Mine are not doing great this year, because of the cool weather (and my late start!). In fact, only 2 of mine "took" but those that did, look bright green, but small. I only use fish emulsion (organic) and that makes everyone happy - tomatoes, flowers, and herbs.

Funny. Mine do too. I mowed them all down last weekend and already I see

signs of new growth emerging. I mowed them because I couldn't pcik out the herbs from the grass, but I had so much mint and chives I harvested them first. And one sole lemon balm growing about 6 feet away (must be from bird poop). This cool weather we're having is not good for the garden is it.
