Dear Michael,
Thank you very much for reaching out to us, and thank you for sharing your very valid concerns about olive oil. I have shared your comments with our buyer and our Product Steering Committee. At this time, we aren't looking to start adding to all of our olive oil labels the seals and logos of all the certifiers and governing bodies that are connected with each item.
However, we can let you know that all of our imported olive oils come from amongst the world's best producers, all of whom comply with the International Olive Oil Council standards and all the governing bodies' standards and regulations.
As we don't just take everyone's word for it, we further test all our of oils to ensure what is says on the label is what's in the bottle.
Below is what we do to ensure quality and integrity with our oils:
Every bottle of Extra Virgin Olive Oil at Trader Joe's is from the first crush first press of the current crop. Traveling within the USA, Italy, Spain, Greece and Australia's olive groves during the harvest season, meeting suppliers and taking part in the process of putting together each of our high quality olive oils, our Olive Oil Buyer personally selects every olive oil blend on our shelves. This is an integral part of how we buy our olive oil and by being involved at this level, we ensure the quality.
In addition, we subject our olive oils to testing by an independent lab to ensure that their level of acidity equals that of Extra Virgin Olive Oil as Determined by the International Olive Oil Council Standards. Plus, we also do our own testing on a quarterly basis.
At Trader Joe's we require FDA regulated GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) program of our vendors. HACCP is a systematic approach to identifying, evaluating and controlling food safety hazards. In addition, our Quality Assurance Team audits our vendors on random and scheduled visits to monitor their facilities and practices on an ongoing basis.
I hope this helps. We greatly appreciate you as a Trader Joe's shopper
Best,
Tracy
