Hey MariaD, I just read *A Baker's Year" about bread from starter and wood oven.

Kept thinking you would enjoy it if you haven't already done so.

She gives two nice decorative tips that I'd like to try sometime.

1. Cut a stencil and--with it in place--sprinkle a light dusting of flour over the unbaked load. Flour browns and stencil area remains pale. Lovely images.

2. Use a paint made from roasted beets to color dough remnants for decorative doodads on pie crusts.

Look at page 158 in the attached link to see a pie crust with beet art work

Please world: if you have a website, keep it updated. I drove out to bakery because website said

it was open and displayed hours. Got there an hour later and it was not.

Dang! I have done the stenciled flour on bread...

That’s terrible driving all the way out there and the place being closed! No fair!

I like the idea of using beets for some color, but honestly think food coloring would just be easier. I had a fabulous website with really cool bread decoration saved on my laptop – before it died and haven’t been able to find it again. smileys/frown.gif

I haven’t made bread in a while, but I was thinking just lately I should make some. Need to refresh my starter. I froze it this time, So will need to see if that worked.
