Hi all - I have been more or less absent for a while but have tried to follow as much as possible.

I will be back to cooking in a big way as soon as we are back from

a vacation. I am accompanying my daughter/3 children to Boston where my s-i-l is working for a few months. We will be in Boston for a few days then pick up my sister and go up the coast to Acadia Park in Maine. Then down to my sister's in Monteray (MA not CA) and finally to NY.

Any suggestions will be appreciated - we do have Boston covered as they lived there while studying. I actually found a post from Judy from

the last time I did this costal trip with my husband and the suggestions were terrific. NY is also covered. So if anyone has an

idea for the coastal trip..thanks.

Sorry for the length of this.....

Elaine

So good to hear from you!

Hi Elaine,

I don't have anything to contribute to your travels (wish I did!) but it sure is nice to 'see' you again.

Happy New Year!
Deb

We visited Acadia in early Nov. and it was very dark at 4pm smileys/wink.gif

but dawn was very early. Locals believe that Acadia should be in the next time zone - us, too.

We had a fantastic road trip up the coast for our second Acadia visit in November, 2015. I checked and all of the restaurants we loved are still in business!

We generally carried picnic food with us during the day as we are hikers but our restaurant favorites were:
in Acadia/Bar Harbor
Geddy's

South of Acadia
Thai Sana, Ellsworth, ME

Waterfront Restaurant, Camden, ME

On the way up the coast from Boston to Acadia, we enjoyed:
Twin Seafood (lunch), Acton, MA

Good Thymes (dinner), Lowell, MA

Ray's Seafood (lunch), Rye, NH

Libby's Market, Brunswick, ME

And, If you venture to Gloucester from Boston
YOU MUST VISIT The Causeway - one of our all-time favorite restaurants!
http://www.thecausewayrestaurant.com

We love seafood and generally forgo fine dining so if my memory serves me, almost all of these recommendations are family-type (and sometimes small carryout markets with a few tables, like Libby's) where we went for no-frills lobster, lobster rolls and lobster/chowder.
Enjoy your travels and family, Elaine. It's good to "see" you smileys/wink.gif Colleen

Acadia is our favorite vacation spot. We go almost every year. Here

are some recommendations:

Restaurants:
Jordan Pond House for tea and popovers on the lawn. Actually,, when we were there this summer the lawn was all dug up, so we went to the Asticou Inn in Northeast Harbor and had tea and popovers on the back deck. Both places have a beautiful view.

McKay's Public House - Eat outside in the garden even in cool weather. They have heaters around the tables.

Thurston's Lobster Pound (in Bernard) - You order the lobster at the front, find a table and they bring it to you. Nice view over the water and the deck has pull-down clear sheets in case of bad weather.

2 Cats for great breakfast. We go here almost every morning.

Mache Bistro - make reservations

Galyns is also good.

Chart Room (Hulls Cove) - They have a lobster special until 6:00 p.m. every day. Nice view.

Bar Harbor Inn has a wonderful place right on the water. Don't like their food that much, but it's a wonderful place to have a glass of wine before going for lobster elsewhere.

Of course, you'll do the park loop road and stop and several place along the way. We love Thunder Hole, Otter Point, Little Hunters Beach; and don't miss Cadillac mountain.

Thuya Gardens in Northeast Harbor is beautiful. Also, the town of Somesville has a lovely little bridge that we always visit. A real photographic opportunity.

Ellsworth which you will pass on your way has a great kitchen store called Rooster Brother.. A must-stop place for us.

If you like bargains, stop at Renys in Ellsworth on your way to Mt. Desert Island. There is also a small place called Made in Maine that you will pass where you can get fantastic jam - love the blueberry but all are good.

I'm sure I've got lots more but don't want to bore you. If you have any questions, just let me know.

Please reach out when you are in NY! Great to hear from you. Hope the kids schedules

give me a day to head into the city.
Best,
Barb

Have fun, elaine. Acadia is a gorgeous park. I took Mom to Castine & Deer Isle for a week

We would drive to to Acadia from there. Bar Harbor streets/shops was overcrowded with cruise ship guests when we arrived in town, so I wasn't that impressed with it.

Rudely enough, Martha Steward did not seem fit to invite me to stay at her place while we were there. And I've bought her magazine! I thought we were so CLOSE.

Thanks to all of you. What fabulous recs. Can't wait! Will report back when I get home in October

So since you asked, let me ask where you stay in or near Acadia or on the way up - if you do.TIA

We usually fly from DC to Portland and rent a car there, so

we don't have any hotel recommendations. If you do go into Portland, we love Fore Street Restaurant there, and Duckfat Restaurant is great for lunch. Their fries are wonderful and they have fried donut holes - delicious!

When our kids and grandkids come, we rent a house through Knowles Realty. When it's just the two of us, we have stayed at the Quimby house in Bar Harbor, but they don't have an elevator. This year we stayed at the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel, and it was very nice. Although we don't spend too much time during the day in the town - very touristy, we do like to stay at a hotel in town because most of the restaurants are here. Parking can sometimes be a problem, and the Bar Harbor Grand is within easy walking distance to most of the hotels. Last year we took my sister along and stayed at the Bayview Inn which had a very nice townhouse which would be good for a family group. The Bayview has a fantastic breakfast buffet and an excellent pastry chef (fresh homemade cookies in the lobby every afternoon - and not those frozen and baked ones). It's a little farther out, but they have a free shuttle bus into town and back.

I forgot to mention Mount Desert Ice Cream. It's delicious! They have two places in town - one very near the Bar Harbor Grand and one on the village green.
