hi all, it's been a while! i'm looking for some gooseberry recipes - they looked so pretty, i just

wildwoods

Well-known member
couldn't resist and now i have a huge basket of them to use up. they'd look glorious atop a cheesecake, but i'm not sure if the flavours would work?

wildwoods, make a nice fresh berry pie- follow directions for blueberry pie but use gooseberrys

wildwoods, they are very tart---like rhubarb. they make a good mix-in with other fruits

to add some zing. Also, they will ripen if left in the fridge. they turn a pretty red and then they are a bit sweeter. My mom always made jam with hers.

Ang...the gooseberries I've had here weren't so sour, in fact, the red ones were

quite sweet. Like grapes, some are sweet and sometimes you get a zinger. I had my first gooseberries last year. Lovely. Do you all get the yellow ones too? (photo attached)

thanks for the ideas! mine range from green to magenta - they're beautiful. made a fool with some,

very tasty, but finnicky (?) pulling the stems and the little fuzzy ends off. great idea to mix with other fruits, ang - you just made me think of the summerfruit pudding that's popular in the uk. mmmmmm.

Traca, we don't have gooseberries up here---hmmmm maybe I'll try planting a bush. the green ones I

remember as being very tart. the redder they get, the sweeter they get. The jam is very nice when made with the deep red ones---or added to raspberries or plums etc. I'm into mixing fruits this year for jam---I have plum/rhubarb and strawberry/rhubarb so far.

Oooh. I need to go back to the farmer's market for gooseberry analysis. smileys/smile.gif Love jam...my favorite

combo is pineapple-apricot (a la pine-cot). Mmmm...

you would love that zucchini jam I posted----it has pineapple and shredded zukes and the

flavor comes from apricot or peach jello---not for the purist, but I think it's a good use of abundant zucchini and a fun gift. It really tastes like chunky apricot jam.

Tasted Ina Garten's Summer Pudding recipe at a pitch-in luncheon on 8/19/08, & it was great! Very

light, and not a one of the guests (myself included) could guess that the base was brioche bread! I've made a good savory bread pudding before (posted a long time ago), but had never eaten a berry bread pudding. This recipe is in my personal file now!
