I've been looking for decent strawberries for weeks now. I open the plastic packaging on the berries and take a whiff but there is just about no berry scent. My sister just got back from L.A. and said you could smell them a block away from the farmer's market.

Guess I'll just have to wait a couple of months and pick my own! Hope you enjoy your dessert!

I can get good strawberries now, and have for quite a few weeks. The California...

...berries have been in for awhile. We had a dry, hot winter here in the Southwest.

Mexican strawberries are available most of the year, but I try not to buy them. If I do, I soak them in a veggie cleaner and do my best to clean them really well.

You may remember me telling this story on the old board, but a produce manager at my local market who seemed knowlegeable told me he never eats any produce from Mexico that grows on the ground. Melons, strawberries, squash, green onions, etc. He says they sometimes irrigate their fields with water from questionable sources that he doesn't trust. Better to avoid them than take a chance on getting really, really sick. He claimed to have seen this practice in person, on farm tours in Mexico.

Michael I've heard the same warning about Mexican strawberries. I heard of a wedding where half

the attendees were sick the next day. The caterer had tried to cut corners by buying his strawberries from a guy on the corner.

I think they're safe, though, if you douse them with tequila.
