Hi, OMG...fast and not so painless!!!

We were worried about the weather in the BVI and worried for our friends there.....they ended up having so little of this wind.

'We' however did not fare so well. For us... ourselves, the house...we were fine, the garden was half and half.....

It appears that the edge passed us by and sent out wee tornados, one seems to have come up the hill, snapping all the trees and bushes on either side of the road and did a right angle turn right on our property. It zapped down the driveway and over the veggie garden and took off just at the chicken run.

We had to cut and clear our way from the driveway, however the hedge down one side had not a leaf burn on it but the trees were all snapped right off at the five foot high mark. The two coach lamps at the front door were turned at right angles, each one in opposing directions. The branches fell over the lime and lemon trees. The pawpaw trees were dropped onto the sweet potatoes. The neem trees flatterend the shade cloth house and the pine tree branches fell across the chicken coop (they were in their concrete bunker) and then the tree directly in the path .....with the gardener's pants and shirt still hanging where he left them was not touched. One would have thought they would have been mangled or even missing, but no, there they were as if there had been no wind at all. The walls on this side of the house were pasted with small debris and the mess is incredible.

The other side of the house has not a leaf out of place. Not a tree or bush has a single sign of any weather passing by!!!

However all the properties along the shore line...some even 10 feet above sea level were awash with the surge.

It all came in and left in a flash as it went by so fast.

Apparently one hotel had to rush evacuate it's guests to the 2nd floor as one waterfront bedroom was suddenly washed open and the bed in which the guests were sleeping started to float around the room....This is very odd as it really is higher than 10 feet off the water level.

We heard that the worst would be between about 6 am and at 8am .......round 1am my DH suddenly thought he should move the cars back from the trees and was out there doing this as one tree snapped its branches so on relating this to me a few mins later we decided to close the final 2 windows with their shutters and went to sleep expecting to be up between 6 and 8 for the worst....well.... That, aparently, was the worst, (when the silly boy was out there)!!!!!

By 11pm we had lost power and the water had been turned off as all water here is desalinated and the plant is on the (usually ) protected side of the island.

My area has just finally got back the electricty just a 1/2 hour ago.....I had no phone charger and a freezer full of wonderful stuff and found that my generator (which we had lent to the ex SIL) does not work anymore so I had to go out and buy one...darn, expensive for 2 days. However.... No-one..... will be allowed to borrow this one!!!!

It is a relief to be back with the rest of the world...nice to say "hi there to all"...

Although there were floods and floating cars no serious injuries were reported, which is a blessing. And all the vegitation will soon be as right as rain again.

Just be awhile before our favourite watering holes are rebuilt.

I also made a very good scallop salad that night......"Fried Scallop Salad"

Read about this and of course could not put my finger on the recipe...
Defrosted some large scallops and dipped them in salted flour, beaten egg and panko crumbs and deep-fried them. These I plated with baby spinach, avocado, cherry tomatoes, etc, etc and kept the dressing to lemon juice and evoo. My husband declared them to be the best way he has eaten scallops.

The worst thing for my DH through all this was.....

'they'tried to break into his office in the marina, 'they' couldnt.
The guard seems oblivious to all this as three other offices were broken into and stolen from...poor darling could then not get into the shop himself as they had damaged the locks and so he could not get the hurricane shutters up....

Finally he drilled and sawed (thank goodness for battered operated Black and Decker tools)through the door putting his back out very badly and the next day he had a very hard time pulling his luggage...he has flown off island for a couple days (work calls) and could barely sit in the 'plane seat.

Thanks so much for update!!! Wish I could pop over and help you with some cleanup. My friends in

Galveston felt blessed to find their homes pretty intact, major flooding in ground floors. And, most of them have power back now.
But, when they got back to town after evacuation, two of the favorite watering holes were up and running with plywood windows, generaters for a few coolers.

So glad you are safe! and thanks again,
Nan
