'We still doing this?

Saturday a.m. got up bright and early to finish putting up the lights outside with DH before the snow (see #6).

From there, I went to a cookie walk... I don't know how popular these are around the country, but around here they're popping up like crazy. Usually in a non-profit place like a church or school, you go in, they hand you a plastic glove and a box and you help yourself to a variety of cookies at $8/lb. They weigh it when you're done, and you can either pay and just leave, or sit down and have a complimentary cup of coffee, tea, or cocoa. It was a little more of a contribution than I meant to give - I gave her a $50 bill and she gave me change for a 20 ( I didn't realize it until I got home. Oh well, Merry Christmas!

One "cookie" I picked up was a Hershey's chocolate kiss melted onto a chocolate-covered cherry (with stem). Really cute "mouse" with almond sliver ears, one broken now (, and little beady eyes. I'd seen cookie mice, but never cherry candy mice. 'Must try for the gluten-free nephew.

Last night was our paper arts club's annual Christmas party. Just a "tea" with cookies, cakes, and pie (I was good, had 2 tiny chocolate-mint cookies and a slice of very good sugar-free cherry pie). Instead of exchanging gifts with each other this year we decided to give money to a charity instead, and chose the scholarship fund set up in the name of our neighbor who was kidnapped and murdered last week.

Today, if it stops snowing, maybe we'll take visit a tree farm and cut down a Christmas tree. Maybe. If it doesn't I'll watch another baking marathon on TV - love those this time of year. Then chicken Alfredo for dinner! Either way I'll be hungry and it will be good comfort food.

And you?

Holiday Six

This morning I glazed two Victorian Orange Cakes with a chocolate ganache. I'm really pleased with how they turned out. I also packeaged up two tins of shortbread. These will be sold at the University Women's Holiday Party today. The money raised goes for university scholarships scholarships.

Started decking the halls too. Decorated an 18 inch tree which adorns our telephone table in the hall and a 24 inch tree which sits atop the china cabinet.

After today's party I plan on finishing the decorating in the dining room and if I have enough energy will start on the living room. The mantle in the dining room gets a lighted evergreen garland and a gazillion Teddy bears.

Happy Holidays!

Holiday ONE... got 4 batches of Christmas cookie dough in the fridge/freezer smileys/smile.gif

cheez, you're good! Perhaps I'll do some more this afternoon. Presently up to my ears decorating.

Dawn, I helped my teenage son make those mice....

...except we called them moles. He took them in to Organic-Chemistry class for "Mole Day." His teacher (a 30 year veteran) was impressed...in all his years of celebrating Mole Day, this was a first!

I made 2 dozen of these creatures last night using chocolate covered cherries, dark and milk

and the hardest part was finding 2 matching, unbroken almond slices. the already covered cherries worked very well. I used Twizzler pull apart red licorice for the tail since I could not find black string licorice anywhere. it worked out just fine and looks a little festive or creepy---depending on your mindset. I put them on white chocolate covered oreos and also the French cookies we get that are rectangles and also covered in white chocolate. I need to do a bit of decorating with some holly/berries or m&ms, but they are just too cute. I used tiny slices of the red licorice for the eyes and used melted chocolate chips for the "glue". My one big disappointment is that the Hershey Kisses are somewhat scuffed up/bloom starting, so they do not look nice and blemish free like in the picture. I don't know how they got them to look so nice. I bought brand new bags of kisses too. I think no one will notice but me. I'm not sure why some of the comments said it was a fast and easy project. It might be easy, but not fast, with all the prep and unwrapping and glueing with chocolate and waiting for it to set so the heads didn't slide off. I'm not sure that I'll be making anymore---at least for this year. I wish I could find my camera to take a picture---if I do, I'll post.

The tails on mine are just the stems from the dipped cherry. Not sure whether

or not the woman dipped her own, but I think they are maraschino ones with stems still on. My kisses are a little scuffed up too (I hate when that happens ;o)) even though it doesn't show in the picture. Maybe she used plastic gloves when she handled them... I think I will try some for a gift this week.
