Hot news: Disneyland has gone healthy with their food choices. Amazing!

I was there on Saturday and we were so totally impressed with the healthy choices. If you wanted junk food it was there but do you really want french fries when you can have fresh sliced mango with limes to squeeze over and chili powder? Or sliced apples with peanut butter?

Everywhere we looked wonderful food options abounded, salmon kabobs with sweet onions, grilled salmon salad and grilled chicken caesars, we even found a fantastic sit down lunch place in Frontierland, for $20 it was an all you can eat BBQ served family style with excellent table service. If you so much as sneezed the waitstaff were there to hand you a napkin or top off the iced tea. The food was really good and I am very picky (although I love a good junk food fest as much as the next person). They even offered us to go boxes for what we couldn't finish. At an all you can eat place? WTF???

It was amazing. And delicious. We also treated ourselves to the pineapple whipped sorbet at the Tiki Tiki room, and saw our old favorites were still around, like the gumbo in the French Quarter (but it pales in comparison to the real thing of course).

By the way, we were there 16 1/2 hours!!!! I am still tired out! Great fun though.

The chicken caesar at the Pizza Port (next to Space Mountain) was my staple last June.

I loved it! The chicken breast was real, and they wanted you to know that. They served it cut into strips, but the strips were not cut all the way through. They were attached to each other at one end. A real chicken breast! Woo Hoo!

We can't get enough of the pineapple sorbet at the tiki bird thingie.

There are some decent options now. I was very happy with the choices.

It used to be the food was hard to bear going there, now it's great.

By the way, I LOVE your little foxy dance! Great big belly laugh....

REC: Dole Pineapple Whip from the Enchanted Tiki Room Aloha Isle

**In Adventureland a small oasis of refreshment awaits you, the Aloha Isle. It serves pineapple juice and other items, including the famous Dole Whips. This recipe, from Dole, makes a similar sherbet-like dessert. Serve it alone or swirled with softened vanilla ice cream.

Pineapple Icee Whip
(from Dole.com)

Prep: 10 min.
Freeze: 3 hrs.
Makes: 8 servings

2 cans (20 oz. each) DOLE Crushed Pineapple
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons lime juice
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup chopped maraschino cherries, mini marshmallow or mini chocolate chips, (optional)
1-1/2 cups heavy whipping cream, whipped

Drain pineapple; reserve 2 tablespoons juice. Set aside.

Place pineapple, lemon juice, lime juice, sugar and reserved pineapple juice in blender or food processor container. Cover; blend until smooth. Stir in cherries or marshmallow or chips, if desired.

Pour into two 1-quart freezer zipped bags. Store bags flat in freezer. Freeze about 1-1/2 hours or until slushy.

Stir gently pineapple slush into whipped cream until just blended, in large bowl. Return to freezer until completely frozen, about 1 hour. Serve.

Here is a YouTube video on making the Pineapple Whip from the mix.

And now I'm done with the Tiki Room whip. (Except after watching the video I can't get the damn tiki room out of my head)

Michael, I cubicled with a Disney SW engineer 12 yrs ago & she was only paid $10/hr!

Her salary more than doubled when she came across town to LM.

I always figured Disney would be THE PLACE to work for prestige, pay, and fun benefits. Their profits certainly indicate that they should be.
I was actually flabbergasted when she told me her salary. (I love when I get to use that word.)

Unless they've improved their pay schedule, they weren't paying their SW engineers much then. At least, not here in FL.

Yes. You are correct, as Johnny would say. Cast members are notoriously underpaid. It's almost...

...legendary.

My son has the same love for the whole Disney package that my wife and I do (how'd that happen?). Our first date was Grad Nite at Disneyland 31 years ago (June 16, 1978). We both grew up loving the park, so we had no trouble getting the kids up to speed!

He's our first born, and his middle name is Walt's middle name, in honor of our first date, and the fact we liked the sound of it.

He's a brilliant child (proud Dad here) and wants to attack a double-major in college, engineering (of some sort) and art. He is equally proficient and a high achiever whether using left brain or right brain. He amazes me.

So, even if he eventually loses his fascination for the Magic Kingdom, he should have some marketable skills under his belt.

We're going with it.

PS: What is "SW"? Software?

Yes...SW = software. Make sure he gets graphic computer design under his belt.

That works both ways...in engineering and in art. He can divie up his brain: left for engineering and right for art.

And if he goes for civil/mechanical engineering + art + graphics, he's heading right for a career in architecture.

His mother is an architect. Very creative and very technically adept. He is taking...

...graphic design and computer animation classes at ASU, both this summer and last. Not bad for a 14-15 year old! (Proud Dad again, sorry)

I have two boys who love Disneyland. The younger one goes through the gates and hurries down Main Street USA to get to his favorite rides.

The elder son goes through the same gate and spends an hour-and-a-half photographing the creative details along Main Street USA. He's fascinated by the amazing creative detail in everything from the buildings to the costumes to the window dressings, to the landscaping. I started it, 'cause I'm the same way!
