How do I make onions less strong?

I know there's a trick to making onions less strong tasting, but I don't remember what it is. Can anyone help?

Slice and soak in ice water for 30 minutes or so. My dad always added a bit of sugar to the water.

Soak in milk for awhile - it draws out the strong taste

i saw something about braising onions on food tv yesterday...

can't track down which show, but it was to make them milder.

The sweet Mayan onions are available practically year round. Naturally mild.

However, I found them too sweet for French Onion soup. Will mix with regular yellow next time.
