How early can I bake a cake before an event?

I'm never really sure about this one so tend to do it at the last minute -- which with work this week is soooo not going to happen (been working till 10pm). So I need to try and do it in stages.

The party is out of town on Sat, and I may drive up Friday night.

P.S. Most cakes can be baked at least the night before, well wrapped in plastic, then in foil OR

you can freeze a cake before frosting. Whether left on the counter overnight at room temperature or frozen, and depending on what type of frosting/icing it is, it's usually best to frost the day of serving unless it's a cake that needs to be refrigerated, such as an icebox cake or cheesecake, etc. I don't like to frost cakes in advance if they don't need to be chilled, such as those mentioned above, since chilling often dries the cakes.

It's that pumpkin shaped cake

so it will be pumpkin cake that I will need to make, then "glue" together with the icing or should I say "butter glaze" you end up pouring over to cover it.

However, I have always wondered about the do ahead of cakes. I recall wedding cakes are made ahead.

The sourcream pumpkin bundt cake I posted above was made Monday

and this is Thursday and it still had a very fresh tasting with a moist crumb. (Yes, I admit it, I just had the last piece for breakfast.)

It also has a firm enough exterior to make the pumpkin shape with two of them glued together. (I'm still thrilled that it came out in one piece, no gluing back together like most bundts.)
