How to remove curry stains?

Hi all,

I have not posted here in a long time. But I'm glad to see that things are as lively as ever! I hope to join back in as a regular...I need to start cooking again. smileys/smile.gif

A question: last night I made Egyptian Kabobs-- an easy and flavorful recipe which uses curry. (I'm happy to post if anyone wants it.) I had to thread the pieces of chicken on the skewers, and now my fingernails are stained yellow. How can I remove the stain? Even after multiple scrubbings with Lava soap, they're still yellow (as are my measuring spoons). Any solutions/solutions/suggestions?

Thanks much,

Amanda

Have you tried nail polish remover using Q-tips? Been there - done that...

I've had Indian marinades color me yellow, pink, or red. That's why I got smart by wearing the nonpowdered latex rubber gloves that comes in a box of 50 at the drug store. The rubber gloves are also useful for deskinning chicken legs or drumsticks before washing same for making Tandoori chicken - you can get a good grip on them.

As for the measuring spoons, I would recommend metal like I use as they're nonporous. I don't think the stain will come out and I wouldn't use any type of rough Brillo-like pad that would make it more porous.

Good luck!

I've seen a number of methods...

one is to apply hydrogen peroxide. Another is to wash with soap and ammonia.
On fabrics, apparently, washing, then placing the wet item out in the sun until it fades to pale pink, then rewashing, does the trick. Not sure you want to try that with your hands! smileys/smile.gif

Stain stick is my best friend!

Hi, I just joined and already I can't keep my mouth shut, lol!

I make curries at least once a week, and I've found that what works best for curry stains on cloth is Spray 'n Wash stain stick (the one with the green top). Just rub a lot on the stain and let it sit at least overnight. It usually comes out with regular washing. For counter tops, etc, I use one of those disinfecting bleach pump-sprays, Clorox I think. My best hint -- get a black apron! It'll save you a lot of work.

Amanda, I splashed some onto a colored t-shirt, I just washed it, and zapped it with

Oxi-clean laundry stain remover and it came out. That doesn't help with your fingernails, but I'm wondering if it would work on the measuring spoons.

Thanks for all the ideas...

...I'll start with the nail polish remover and work down from there. I'll report back.

BTW, the measuring spoons are metal so I was suprised to see them stain, even though I rinsed them almost immediately (my plastic ones are beyond help). Guess that was some strong curry powder.

Cheers,
Amanda

a bit of Clorox in some water. Just dip your hands in it. It won't hurt you.

or spray some Clorox kitchen cleaner on a sponge and clean your sink. your hands should come clean just from the solution on the sponge. But watch out about leaning up against your counter when using this cleaner---it will bleach your clothes just like bleach.

Hi Channa!

I'm also a newby, everyone here has been so nice and welcoming! So now I get to welcome you!

Thanks, and...

Thank you for the nice welcome. You're all so friendly and helpful! I'm really impressed by your enthusiasm and the high calibre of your cooking. I hope I can live up to your expectations, lol.

Some of you seem interested in curries. I grew up in Britain, and curry houses are very popular there. That's that style of curry I love -- the curry-house taste with lots of spices and full of flavour.

I've had good success with this site:

http://www.realcurryrecipes.co.uk/

My favourite recipes from there are Saag Gosht (lamb with spinach) and Mutter Paneer (Indian cheese with peas in a spicy gravy). I also liked the Chicken Ceylon which has a coconut milk sauce that is just lovely.

If you go to that site, check out the forum. You won't believe how serious those people are about their curries, lol!

I'm trying a new chutney this afternoon. If it's good, I'll pass it on to you.

Thanks for the link, Channa. My husband is English...

grew up between Durham & Newcastle, we met in London at UCL, he worked in Manchester, & then he came to the states when we decided to get married. He loves a good curry. I'll be sure to check out the site!

Thanks for the great link Channa. I have posted it here as a link to click. this is how:

Just put the address in the "Link URL" line down below this message reply on the reply page when you are replying to a message or posting a new message.

Oh, I love "How We Met" stories!

Hint: if you don't see his fave on that site, post a request on the proper board, and a chef will give you the recipe. That's how I got one of my favourites.
