Hubby wants to buy me a Vitamix. I'm researching to see if it's the

right thing for me and thought I'd check here to see if others who have them like them, use them, wish they had something different (a Blendtec or other brand?). And do you really use it? I'm primarily interested in having one to make healthy smoothies every day... the blender I've been using isn't cutting it, literally...lol, in fact, I just burned out one of the blenders and am now on my second one. I'd also like to make frozen desserts like sorbets and ice creams, and occasionally soups.

Any words of wisdom? Recipes to share?

For what you are describing the Vitamix should work great. . .

velvety smooth smoothies, soups, and frozen desserts. You probably will be a while in burning out a Vitamix.

I make a potato-broccoli soup where I cook the potatoes and some onions till the taters are done, steam the broccoli till it is tender-crisp then into the Vitamix it goes with some water or milk or broth. Zip! Velvety smooth soup, just add cheese if desired and it is delicious.

Smoothies in the Vitamix are great. The thing is so powerful that I can put in whatever, skin and all (if the skin and pits are edible) and it is smooth, smooth. And if I make it with some frozen fruit, I get a nice sorbet-consistency dessert out of it.

They are an investment, but you will not have to buy another or another blender the rest of your life.

I love my Vitamix! When I make smoothies I add some cabbage, carrots

to every mix. You don't taste it, and it adds fiber and vitamins. Love it. I process whole fruits (but I core the apples). I thicken the smoothis with sugar free vanilla pudding powder -- just a tablespoon or two, depending on the number of servings. I'd recommend the machine.

Thanks ladies. It's a go. Getting the Vitamix this weekend. Sooo excited.

Saw some great recipes and ideas in the archives here as well. Yay!

Love my VM! FYI, VM is going to be the TSV on QVC tonight/tomorrow

Yes I LOVE my VM but FYI...

From my VM group:

There is going to be a Vitamix Creations 2 speed blender as a Today's Special Value on February 17th. It will include a 48 ounce wet container, a 32 ounce dry container, a tamper and 3 cookbooks for $399.90 (and 5 easy pays) and free shipping. Comes in Cinnamon, Red, Black, Espresso, Cobalt Blue and Turquoise. (This means it will start going on sale at 9pm west coast time/midnight ET. I love watching the demos for new recipe ideas.)

Help me get over my fear & open mine LOL!

It was SO freaking expensive!!! I've used them in culinary school and restaurants and LOVED them but it just scares me to think how much I paid. I got one during the in-store show at Costco back before Thanksgiving (it was SUPPOSED to be their last show before Christmas and I wanted red!) and got the dry grain container also - my Christmas present more or less to myself.

I was buying some great juices made with juicer that makes the highest quality juices but I am sure not spending $2k on something that is definitely a single tasker and takes up a lot of real estate.

Several people lately are going for the BlendTec ones and I am not sure I know why one is better than the other so I would really love to understand the difference if anyone knows.

I will tell you that they are awesome. Great way to make fantastic flavored oils, dressings, sauces, etc.

Well it is most definitely, not, a single tasker smileys/smile.gif ...(more)

Open up that puppy!!!

I make a raw green smoothie every day and for that alone I've gotten my money's worth (it even pulverizes small seeds like chia/flax/etc). I also make soup in it (the blades spin so fast it heats/cooks). Chop onions/etc, pulverize hard cheeses like Parmesan so you can buy in bulk, make "ice cream", nut butters, nut milks, fondues, lemon curd, mill grains/flour (using the dry blade container), kneads bread, etc. Plus, it damn near cleans itself. Even if you want clear juices, it's easier to use than a juicer and using a nut bag gives the same results. Several folks I know have returned their juicer after seeing the VM or just don't use them anymore. I could go on and on...the link is 52 ways to use it.

Oh, I even use another container to blend peels/scraps I can't digest/etc into compost I pour in the beds in the yard. You can even make organic bug sprays and face masks.

@Marsha tbay, where are you? She turned me on to the VM.

I freaking love my VM! - can you tell? Hehehehee (I have a 5200)

(You should watch the demos on QVC today to get inspired, or videos online.)

Pat, you don't actually have to core the apples if you don't want...

stems/seeds/peel the whole thing is fine...I looked into the seed question of apples and the consensus seems to be they are fine.

Not in small quanities

you would have to eat LOTS of apple seeds (in one sitting) to cause "damage". From what I've gleaned some research shows eating little bits at a time can be a preventative for some forms of cancers.

I've known folks who've eaten years worth without an issue.
