I accidentally (sort of) bought some coconut oil (solid), thanking it was

something else. Now what do I use THAT for?! (My cat loves it, so all is not lost, I guess!) It has hardly any taste, no sugar, and melts very quickly. I thought solid fats at room temperature were saturated, and therefore unhealthy.

I am now reading it is good for you. Isn't this the same as palm oil, which used to be used on popcorn in movie theaters that was considered to be so evil? What am I missing?

I've heard "expert" opinions on both sides. The LOHAS zeitgeist right now is that

coconut oil is healthy. On the extremes it is touted as a cure all. My wife and "healthy" daughter believe it has health benefits both as a food and a lotion. Despite that discussing this with a Nutrition PhD recently he reinforced the established opinion that it was bad for you - evil. Well he didn't use that term but that was the gist of it.

I have a big vat of it for popcorn but that is the only thing that I like it for and I'm not sure I buy into the health benefits/negatives on either side. The "experts" are the same ones that told us how evil butter and eggs were and gave us the true evil: margarine and artificial butters of various types. Now we know that eggs are not as evil as stated and that butter is long term healthier for you than the artificial stuff. OTOH I guess I'm satisfied with the popcorn oil as a guilty pleasure and stick with my standby grapeseed oil for just about everything else.

I love it for popcorn too. But I use it for other things too. It gives a soft edge to veggies

to chicken, to fish- I kind of like it. It is great with sauteed shrimp- and I used it for cococonut-battered fish which was really good.

so..it doesn't leave behind a "coconuty" taste? That's what I always assumed. (and you know what

it means when you "assume".)

part of flavor is smell so there you go regardless.

my daughter makes pancakes with it. makes me want to retch first thing in the morn...

The Naked Popcorn from Popcornopolis is made with coconut oil and its fabulous!!

Big bag at Costco for $4.99. And no - there's no coconut taste or smell.

Re: I accidentally (sort of) bought some coconut oil (solid), thanking it was

I almost bought the same thing at Costco but thought what would I use this big container for also 23.0 dollars.

I saw u can make lotion out of it also 8 oz Coconut oil, 8 oz baby lotion cheap stuff ( like dollar store) and 8 oz Vitiman E cream ( dollar store) whip up with mixer and store in airtight container.

Well, it is not for everyone that is for sure.

I would get tired of it if I used it all the time. Yes, there is always a mild coconut smell to it- it is coconut oil so it is bound to smell like coconut smileys/smile.gif

Thanks Paul and everyone else too. Yes, it has a nice, light, coconut

flavor, but I like that. I used it in my oatmeal this a.m. but could not detect any taste.

Add 1/3 cup to 12 oz chopped chocolate and melt in double boiler for sauce that cracks on ice cream

I was VERY surprised that the meat from a Thai coconut had almost no flavor/scent.

That's why I wondered if the oil derivative was odor-less. I see it used in a lot of vegan & gluten-free baking.
