as Akela and my assistant Raksha we get to have the cubs in my kitchen to prepare and cook us the final meal for their badges.
So after the morning meeting those ready for this step here in 2's or in todays case 3's...WHEW!!!
Last week we had my grandie and her DD, they are 10 1/2yr and they did very well making the menu on their own.
Serving it I was so impressed as they took it in turns to talk as the waitstaff do in restuarants...with exactly the intonations...they made up the names of the dishes using their 2 names combined to make one name for each dish.
1st was a salad comprising feta, toasted pignoles and lettuces, onion, tomatoes.
2nd was pasta "Rasta Pasta" with chopped garlic, tomatoes, evoo and freshly shaved parmesan all followed by a lovely
3rd chocolate mousse.
They also made home made lemonade and mixed fruit punch.
They were so organized and calm and served us first, washed up then only did they eat....
Today we had 3 (THREE) boys...OH what a difference boys are....they made a wonderful plate but the scuffling and thumping and "I'm gonna do it. No, I'm gonna"
Had us so exhausted.
This is partly because 2 of these are quite young 8yrs and one 11 but the 11 yr old has never been allowed or apparently inclined to cook...Dad has a restuarant!
And the mess!! Although they attempted to clean up and deff. get marks for that they still had a water flick fight at the sink, a pretend I'm a pirate and stabing you with a knife (yes, with my knife....Boys!!) and they all couldn't resist tasting all the way through...(so, even I do this)
Their meal, though, turned out really well
Bruschetta
Caprese Salad
Meatballs coverd with parmesan sprinkles and parsley.
And then a dessert.....Rum cake, tin of mixed fruit in a sponge batter base which they had measured out at home and whipped cream.
I have to say the youngest was amazing, he mushed the meatballs, pressed the garlic and then deep fried them to perfection, all on hiw own. I was standing right by though making sure there were no others nearby for the inevitable scuffles. We are very impressed.
The 11 yr old broke his first egg...he who hates to have his hands dirty was running to wash hands even as he was trying to break the egg.
Still he got into the swing of things and sliced the tomatoes, mozzarella and washed and sliced the basil. Drizzling the evoo was quite a feat as he has not had the experience of 'drizzling', took a lot of effort and concentration...we forget what it is like to some-one new at the game.
This was obviously Italian bent as one of the cubs is Italian but he is a scream.
He does know how to cook he says, "Well," he said "I can tell you how it's done as I spend a lot of time watching my Nonna and parents cook."
and although he had never done it he chopped his tomatoes and the parsley (after I showed him) by holding the pointy end of the knife with the heel of his hand and 'zooping' the handle up and down fast...just like a pro.
"HuH" he says, as he idly zipped a tomato bit along the counter top as one would a tiddle-wink,
"I can cook with Gorden Ramsy in Hell's kitchen, wow, I can cook as well as he can"......
(dear lad with your laid back attitude and playing with the food etc...you would really suffer under Gorden's tongue, that's for sure)
They plated and served us what little was left, after all the snitching, and there was certainly plenty.
The dessert was great even if they first forgot to beat and add the egg...out of the dish it came, slop back into the bowl with the beaten egg and all fought (happily as boys do)over who was going to squeeze the spray cream over the slices, on each other's noses and even joked about doing this to the dog who was standing expectantly waiting for the many bits that fell to the floor.....
I can't tell you how impressed I am with them all.
Next time we have another 2 girls (almost 11yrs)and I believe a newpaper reporter is very interested in what my pack are doing and want to be here for an article in the Kids newspaper.....
After my gardener's finger story I was rather concerned about young lads cutting their fingers but no, no-one had any incident at all.
Fantastic.
