I cannot believe how food prices have gone up. Two weeks ago I bought a dozen

eggs at the Farmers Market and the lady told me her eggs were now $9. I gasped and asked why and she said everything has gone up so much including the egg cartons she uses. We love her eggs and they are very large, with beautiful yolks, but $9. Later, we stopped by our local grocery store for a few more things and they had their brand of eggs on sale for $1.39 a dozen! However, yesterday when we stopped by there, the entire egg section and one other were totally empty and it looked like they were working on something. So maybe the reason for the low price of eggs.

Beef is outrageous here, and we have local cattle farms. I did get a nice center-cut pork loin yesterday, and some other cuts of beef on sale yesterday, so now I am on the lookout for sales each week.

some of it is still regional but some of it is SHAMEFUL profit taking by big retailers

I read an article a while back that discussed local farms and they said the break even point after all expenses considered, for a local farmer selling eggs was $6/doz. If they were selling for less than that, they were likely doing so at a loss. This was before the pandemic and resulting cost increases.

To put this in perspective one of the very unfortunate results of our pandemic is a massive wealth shift from small businesses to mega corps and retailers. Much harder to shop local when you are afraid to or even banned from going outside your home but Amazon, Walmart or Costco will deliver to you.

Karen, not sure where you're at in CA, but my friend in Los Gatos paid $20

for 2 dozen fresh eggs LAST YEAR at her local farmer's market. Apparently (there, at least) fresh eggs were much higher than regular market prices even then. Haven't asked what she's paying this year with the virus situation. Most of her grocery list seemed to consist of wines, smoked salmon and chocolate.

Last year they were $6/doz at my local NC farmer's market. Thankfully, I have a generous neighbor with chicks.

I'm north in Redding CA, I was paying $5 last year for 1 dozen very large eggs. I even bought

duck eggs which are even larger and great for baking for the same price.

I’m a stones throw from LG and that sounds about right at FM...

Our FM is closed for the duration of covid, but Los Gatos is the next closest to me, so I might go on Sunday if I want to brave their parking. The last time I looked which was a few years ago FM eggs were eight dollars and I’m not sure it was a full dozen.

Grocery store prices have definitely gone up. Quite a bit. I can’t remember what it was, but I noticed something recently had jumped by two dollars. Also, sales flyers are smaller too. Rhubarb was nearly $6lb.

I'm betting all the excess eggs that were produced for Easter have run out. My local store over the

hill had eggs for $.25 a dozen up to a month ago. Now the same eggs are $1.5 /dozen.

And prices vary between farmers markets. Big difference in . . .

Prices of stuff are HIGH at a farmer's market in a rather upscale town west of us. Go east and you can find the same vendors in another market in a not-so-upscale town and the prices are MUCH lower.

Yep. And there wasn't even a limit on how many you could buy. It's a tiny town (~3,000)

and most people shop either at Walmart or Giant Eagle, not this tiny local store which is more expensive. But it's right over the hill from mom's and a quick stop. They were medium eggs and I only bought 2 dozen because it seemed wrong to hoard eggs, but, you know, they were eggs. Then a few weeks later I bought another 2 dozen.

OH! They were smaller than I usually buy! Maybe THAT hurried along the oxidation problem I started running into. Because now I'm back to buying large eggs and my timing is much better using CathyZ's suggestions.

Ah...enlightenment. Thanks, Maria!

It's a door delivery usually 2 hours. I have been ordering groceries from Amazon Fresh

since we've been locked down. You can literally get anything--although they run out sometimes.
The eggs do come in an extra cardboard covering around the regular carton.
