I found a new book to me today about reversing diabetes by Dr. Neal Barnard. I can't recall who

marsha-tbay

Well-known member
has been diagnosed with it but I thought this might be encouraging for someone.

The tital is Dr Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes

What type of Diabetes, 1 or 2

This is very interesting to me because my son Joe had a very bad accident 4 1/2 years ago and believe it or not it caused him to have type 1 diabetes, 2 to 4 insulin shots a day. I would love to know where this book is published. Though I bet it is for type 2. The best I know of and I use it & it can prevent & reverse ( to a majority point) type 2 diabetes is the Glyscemic Index, I have this book and it takes a bit to understand it but once you get started, it's healthy eating all the way and a definate new life style, I lost weight and it has been staying off, my son is eating better and I feel better, at 42 years old I am not ready to give in (ever wonder why diannecerkvenik64 well it's 1964 (last year of the baby boomer). I woudld appreciate any diabetes information I can ever get my hands on, any helpful hints or anything. Thank all of you in advance, this will mean, personally, the world to me

Dianne, Barnard doesn't specify 1 or 2 on the front of his book. When I receive my copy I'll let

you know if he talks about both. Perhaps someone else already has the book and can comment.

A friend got his type 2 diabeties under control by going on the

South Beach diet and walking 2 minles a day. He still tests several times a day, but no longer has to take shots.

I also have a friend that reversed his type 2 using the South Beach Diet

You all know I lost a ton of weight on the SB Diet- my doc told me I was in danger of falling prey to type 2 diabetes and it was an added inspiration for me to lose the weight. Now I have no risk of diabetes, low cholesterol, no aches and pains and LOTS of energy!

A friend of mine lost 100 lbs on the South Beach and is no longer at risk from type 2 diabetes. I think it is incredible that one can eliminate this health danger and live healthy again. All it took was changing the eating habits and exercising. It isn't just the South Beach Diet which will help get the type 2 diabetes in control but the SB is designed around the glycemic index so it is a natural for those who are at risk and want to lose.

Interesting, have had several friends who have lost weight cooking for diabetic family members!

And the walking thing BobbiJo mentioned, my doctor sez, most all

our physical problems are affected by diet, exercise and genes; we can change two of them!

AND LOTS AND LOTS OF WATER TOO!!

Stop drinking soda, refined sugars (processed food is the devil) ANYTHING THAT IS GLUTOSE OR AN INGREDIENT THAT ENDS IN OSE= SUGAR. And beware it's quite hidden, the first 6 ingredients on any label that ends in ose is sugar and not good, if it is 7th or lower in ingredients its somewhat safe but beware its sugar (can I say this enough) This forum is great for better health because the majority of the recipes and hints are based on foods from scratch. Actually it's due to my son's diabetes (2 years ago) that I went back to natural cooking, very rarely use processed or packaged food. Take out is touchy but common sense has to play a part here. Lot's of work cooking from scratch, you bet, loving to cook makes this happyness. Carbohydrates are dangerous too, and most starches. This is why the glycemic index book works for diabetics type 1 and 2 and there is so much out there to substitute. Anybody with ideas for substiutes?

So true, Nan and diannecerkvenik64

I know for myself I must walk 3 miles 4-5 times a week to keep everything in balance. Well, okay, I walk on the beach so it doesn't seem like exercise at all. It is so beautiful down at Hanalei Bay that before I even realize it, my walk is over. Tricked my brain again!

I stopped drinking ALL sodas, juice, everything except water, decaf tea, coffee and I do have milk on cereal but that is it. I drink a lot of sparkling water and, since I am not a real fan of water, I drink decaf tea most all of the day to get the liquid in me. My real enemy was all the cranberry juice I used to drink. I thought I was doing a good thing but NOPE. I drank diet sodas too- and am so much better off without any of it now.

dianne, i wonder if your son's diabetes is actually...

diabetes insipidus, which can be caused by brain injuries. if this is the case, while following these diets would be beneficial and may reduce the amount of insulin he needs, i'm not sure if this type of diabetes can truly be reversed by diet. i'd be interested in hearing what you think, maybe you could reply in a pm? smileys/smile.gif

Actually Walking on the sand is better than the pavement

because it takes more energy and its good for tightening the muscles. Juices (unless made from squeezing fruit) is full of sugar glucose which is worse than refine sugar. I envy you walking on the beach, I miss the shore (seaside heights in NJ & asbury park & wildwood NJ) In arizona there are lakes (most man made but Az has beautiful mountains and desert and especially Sedona Az with the unbelievable red rocks)I will some day go to Hawaii it is a goal I have for myself and I want to go to a luau and have poi.

Dianne, up above in T&T we have a section for Special Diets. There's not much

in there right now, but maybe you have some good stuff to post there for cooking for a diabetic.
