I had to smile about Los Angeles and the Meatless Monday endorsement

Years ago I worked at a Seventh Day Adventist hospital near a predominantly SDA town. Most SDA folks (at least that branch) are vegetarian and also won't consume caffeine, so the very pretty hospital cafeteria shared by employees & visitors was vegetarian. I have never seen so much fried, cheezy, greasy food or so many sugary desserts & drinks in one place in my life. I know that is not the way all vegetarians eat but it still cracks me up remembering how I thought it was going to be healthier.

My dear, sweet, saintly Aunt was SDA. She was vegetarian...

...her whole life, but ate the kinds of foods you describe.

She was overweight most of her life and her eating habits contributed to her passing.

I also worked at a hospital in San Diego that was SDA. The cafeteria was as you describe.

We hae Pointless Meatless Monday here too, and I chuckle

Because many of the city's residents would love to have so much meat in their houses that they need a day off. It's more like a day with meat is a super special day. Oh the irony of bring food insecure.

I'm not food insecure, but even with our cost of living being much lower than there

I positively long for a nice big hunk of beef. Just a few years ago I could buy chuck roast for $1.99 a lb. now it is $3.99 or $4.99. I can still buy chicken & pork on sale pretty cheaply.

Melissa, I was really shocked at the price and quality of beef when I moved to Texas. In Florida,

I could buy Angus USDA Choice beef and the sale prices rolled around regularly. Here, the meat sold at HEB is USDA Select, except for a very few pieces of what they call natural and they tell me is choice. It's mostly steaks and an occasional shoulder roast and as you've said high priced. The Select is more expensive than Choice in FL.

This week, WF has shoulder roast "on sale" for $5 a lb. and I noticed the select shoulder roast is on sale for $3 at HEB. I've stayed clear of the select so far, except for some short ribs because select was all they had, but they're in the freezre and we haven't tried them. Staying clear of the Select means giving up a lot of cuts of beef, unless I can get them at Costco or Sam's or pay really high prices at Central Markets or Whole Foods.
