I have a chance to see Paula Deen this week. Have any of you seen...

I agree with you, Gretchen. The other day I was ironing and.......

watching her and she cooked a "southern" meal that had enough cholesterol to kill anyone. A cream of mushroom soup with a quart of heavy cream, a stick of butter, etc. That was followed by chicken fried steak with gravy and biscuits. Then some rich dessert that I have forgotten. She should be taken off the air by the dept of public health!

I don't know if she claims "authentic" southern cooking but I find her homey...

warm and fun to watch. Much more fun to watch than the healthy nutritionist's show. Doesn't mean I'd follow her heart attack inducing recipes, though!

Hear hear, Cyn, to everything! There is one woman on TV who does a low-fat show...

or something like that...and the intro always shows her running and doing iron-woman things. Yah well I don't have the time or money to do all that. I may have gotten a few tips from her show, but she starts making me crazy. I try to cook very healthy meals most of the time, but occasionally you gotta give me the butter and cream. This gal (just can't remember her name) sucks all the fun out of cooking and eating. Paula has given me some spectacular recipes. Just one of my favorites is her "Not Yo' Mama's Banana Pudding". I never would have made something like that, but the reviews made me try it. Oh my. People go mental over it, including myself.

I have to disagree - she cooks just like my nana and extended family did, and back in the day no one

was concerned about fat or carbs, but then again we were a farming family that was a LOT more active than most Americans are today. When I look back at old family albums, there were NO even slightly overweight people in those photos. Today, I watch what I eat, eat salads most nights, jog regularly but don't look half as fit as those folks who had biscuits with sausage or redeye gravy for breakfast, fried chicken for lunch and smothered porkchops for dinner!

Even though I don't care for her, I think a personal appearance would be interesting

and maybe "valuable". I have seen shows with her on that weren't "scripted" like her cooking show and she's pretty glib and entertaining.

Flay vs Deen...There was an article in one of the food magazines

about Bobby Flay and a visit to Savannah. Paula Deen met with him at her brother's restaurant and told him she'd love to be a challenger on Iron Chef and wouldn't he be surprised if she walked in. She told him the secret ingredient could be butter or even better, canned biscuits. Flay yelled "forfeit", lol. I agree, she's a delightful personality, go for it.

I'll defer to Gretchen about authentic southern cooking, but I think Paula Dean is adorable.

Her enthusiasm is contageous, and she's one of the few who can make you want to get up off the couch and start cooking.

Her recipes are heavy, though. She and those boys of hers would weigh 400 pounds each if they really ate like that!

And you've really got to hand it to her. She's accomplished so much >>

in a relatively short time, and she started with nothing. She was a poor widow, and needed to raise her two boys, and began having the boys sell sandwiches to local businesses. Look where she is today!!!!!!! And, altho I don't cook with her heavy handed rich additions, I love watching her ( and imagining what those riches taste like, LOL).

Okay then! Anyone from upstate New York, meet me there!! 2:30 Saturday, 5/27

Of course will have to stop by the slot machines first!)

I never really cared for her until I saw her on a Christmas special with

Emeril (not one of my favs, either) - they have great chemistry together.

Well, an update. We went to where she was having the show...

but encountered a detour on the way. Had to go back about 10 miles and ended up going a different (slower) way. So we were almost 1/2 hour late. My friend nor I could see paying full price for something that was 1/3 over, so we decided to stay in the casio, and if, by chance, either one of us won $30, we'd go upstairs and see her.

Long story short, I lost $41 and she won $980 on one roll! But by that time, the show was over. Fun day, anyway!

P.S. I'm thinking of renting myself out as a good luck charm - everyone wins when I go but me (or so it seems)!
