I have a Norpro Terra Cotta Bread Warmer. Is it microwave safe?

I'd make a call to Norpro

However, I have never had anything terra cotta that should go in a microwave. It may crack, and I do not think it would heat up well.

Cook's Illustrated mention

From Cook's Illustrated- We tested the JBK Terra Cotta Bread Warmer ($7.95), distributed by Harold Imports Co., a 5- by 3-inch terra cotta tile, about the same size and shape as a smartphone. After you heat it 10 minutes in a 350-degree oven (we also tried soaking it in water and heating it on high in the microwave 3 minutes), you place the hot tile inside a cloth napkin or tea towel in your bread basket, with your warm bread or rolls. The heated tile retains and radiates enough heat to keep the bread warm much longer than cloth-wrapped bread without the tile. We compared its performance to our previous winner, which was discontinued. At 6.5 ounces, it's a little lighter, so it retains slightly less heat, but still performed well.

Paula Wolfert has a book on clay pot cooking that should help. Check out her tips there. I

wouldn't microwave it. I'm guessing the material needs a more gradual warmth. Also any nicks in the surface may cause it to crack if heated too rapidly. Check out Paula's book for more info.

I would not do it. I think it will crack. Terra Cotta is best used after being soaked in warm

water and slowly heat up. I think it will crack, or worse...Kind of explode and cause damage to your micro. Just my thoughts.

Yes, I agree. Lost a wonderful pottery dish that way by not understanding that

microwaves heat by making water molecules vibrate--and there will be water in the terra cotta.
I think you could heat it submerged in water.
But it would be easy enough to put in the oven with something else you are cooking.
