I have a sour dough starter. His name is Dave. He's over a year old and mighty tasty.

you are too funny.....

but unless you baked it, poured some bleach on top of it, it's not possible to kill a starter in 48 hours

of course, I could be under-estimating your abilities as a killer!

I have a book that was published in 1977. It is a sourdough cookbook, and it includes...

...a little packet of "Gold Rush Sourdough Starter".

I bought it at a used book store about 10 years ago. I'm thinking about using it. I'm going to bet it is still good.

I had killed 3 before Dave...

Went to the CIA for bread baking class and sour dough was one of the doughs we made. You went home with the instructions for making your own sour. I followed the instructions for about 2 weeks and it was nice and bubbly. Just before it would be ready to use, I was going to my parents for the weekend and took it with me since I couldn't miss the daily feedings. The day after I fed it at my parents, things didn't look right. Then I realized - my tap water is well water, theirs is city water. The chlorine killed it. I tried resuscitation (bottled spring water), but alas it was dead.
So, I tried again once I got home but this time after a few days it turned blue. So.... dumped, cleaned and tried again. And again after a few days this time it turned pink.
At this point my friends were calling me a killer and threatening to call DYFUS (child services).
So, in February last year I ordered a starter from KA. Little did I know it would be delivered while I was away, and it sat in the unheated delivery plastic bin in the driveway covered with snow for 3 days.
Friends again threatened to call DYFUS.
But, when I brought in the very cold sour, and let it warm up, I started to feed it. And thus Dave was born (or resuscitated).
Since then I've split Dave into Dave 1 and Dave 2 - Dave 2 a backup in case... well... just in case.
I might turn Dave 2 into a rye sour - there were directions in the CIA booklet from class on how to do that.
The Daves sit in the fridge and I remember to feed them once a month (usually - don't call DYFUS!). When I want to use, I just start feeding every day and leave on the counter. Made some pretty tasty bread and waffles smileys/smile.gif

It's when you think they are dead, they aren't, they come back

I've had several versions, like a rye one, but I don't anymore. If I need rye, I can feed rye and all will be fine.

Starters REALLY like to play dead, but if you try to start one in winter they never come alive IMHE.
