I have turnips, both tops and bottoms. What do I do with them?

I have never used them before. The turnips look like really big radishes. They were gifted to me and I would hate to let them go to waste. Thanks!

Here is my favorite recipe for them--Caramelized Turnips. I also like to mix them with potatoes

for mashed potatoes. Matchsticks are really nice in a salad. You can treat the greens like collards--they're a bit strong.

You can also make a nice soup from both the roots and greens. Just saute some onion, add broth and/or milk and the peeled turnips and cook till tender, add the greens and cook till wilted, and puree.

Dawn, Check Paula Deen's Recipe "Tugboat Turnips" at Food Network - terrific recipe....check reviews

Interesting thing about turnips...friends of mine in England say at the grocery store

you see TONS of turnips. Apparently they're more popular there than in potatoes. She was shocked to arrive here and find a measly section of turnips and a mountain of potatoes. It's the opposite in the UK, so I hear.

The BBC's website has a ton of recipes. Might be fun to see what they do with turnips.

Now I am wishing I had gotten a bunch at the Farmers Market!

I just love to cook the greens down a LONG time with salt, water, vinegar, side meat, and red pepper flakes. And then serve with some cornbread to sop up the pot licker.

As for the turnip,I love roasting or like Joe, mix with potatoes.

But beside those, I like to roast the turnips with other winter root vegetables, use in beef stew, use the greens in soups like you would kale - sausage and kale soup bein one I use it in.

Also, if I really like using all my greens together just stewed like plain turnip greens - radish, turnip, etc. I don't throw any of it away.
